Chicago State Unveils Inaugural 10-Game 2026 Schedule as FCS Independent, Eyes NEC

Chicago State unveiled its first-ever varsity football schedule on Feb. 18, 2026, announcing a 10-game 2026 slate as the Cougars begin competition at the FCS level as an independent before a planned transition into the NEC. The university’s release names two specific matchups reported by HBCU Gameday: a home game against Norfolk State on Sept. 26, 2026 in Chicago and a road trip to North Carolina A&T on Oct. 17, 2026 in Greensboro.

HBCU Gameday flagged the Oct. 17 entry as problematic, noting, “On Wednesday, Chicago State officially unveiled its inaugural football schedule, and it shows the Cougars traveling to North Carolina A&T on Oct. 17.” That is the same date HBCU Gameday says the Aggies currently have reserved for Norfolk State, creating an apparent scheduling conflict.

The Chicago State release compounds the confusion by listing Norfolk State twice on the Cougars’ inaugural slate, according to HBCU Gameday: “The Chicago State release adds another wrinkle. It lists Chicago State hosting NSU on Sept. 26 in Chicago. In other words, the Cougars’ first season includes two dates connected to Norfolk State, one at home against the Spartans, then a month later a trip to Greensboro to face the Aggies.” HBCU Gameday’s lead noted the broader interest in the potential A&T-NSU matchup, writing, “HBCU football was looking forward to an interesting matchup this October as Michael Vick and Norfolk State traveled to North Carolina A&T.”

On the question of whether Norfolk State will appear on A&T’s Oct. 17 slate, HBCU Gameday reported that “a source indicated to HBCU Gameday that Norfolk State decided to pull out of the Oct. 17 game. HBCU Gameday has reached out to NSU for a statement.” That pullout claim is sourced to an unnamed tip to HBCU Gameday and has not been confirmed by Norfolk State or North Carolina A&T in the materials released so far.

Industry listings corroborate Chicago State’s independent status. FBSchedules shows Chicago State under the FCS Independent category alongside Merrimack and Sacramento State, while North Carolina A&T is listed under the CAA and Norfolk State under the MEAC. Those conference placements underscore scheduling logistics Chicago State faces as one of a small group of FCS independents building an inaugural road and home slate.

What remains unsettled is the full list of Chicago State’s 10 opponents beyond Sept. 26 and Oct. 17, plus official confirmations from Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T on the Oct. 17 reservation. Chicago State’s release served as the primary document for the announcement, but the complete 10-game schedule and any responses from NSU or A&T will determine whether the Cougars’ independent season holds as published or requires reshuffling ahead of the program’s planned move to the NEC.
