Cornell landed one of its most notable recruiting wins of the cycle by securing Solana Beach quarterback Dax Labrum, a California signal-caller whose decision was driven as much by trust as by production. Labrum’s connection with assistant Sean Reeder began when the two first met during his sophomore year at Santa Fe Christian High School, and Cornell kept working that relationship until the Big Red emerged as the right fit.

That patience mattered. Labrum said Cornell made him feel like a priority from the start, and head coach Dan Swanstrom evaluated him in January at a throwing session before the offer and commitment came together. Prep Redzone reported that Labrum recently picked up his first offer from Cornell, underscoring how the Ivy program beat out the usual recruiting-distance concerns by staying consistent. For a quarterback from California choosing an Ivy FCS school in a crowded transfer era, that kind of long-term contact stands out.

The numbers explain why Cornell pushed hard. MaxPreps lists Labrum at 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, and his 2025 season at Santa Fe Christian was the kind of senior year that turns heads nationally. He completed 207 of 310 passes for 3,106 yards and 36 touchdowns, with seven interceptions, while Santa Fe Christian finished 13-1 and won the CIF San Diego Section Division II championship. Prep Redzone said he completed 67 percent of his passes and got the ball out on time, traits that fit an offense looking for rhythm and efficiency.

Cornell’s appeal went beyond football. Labrum viewed the program as a place where he could chase an Ivy League title and an FCS national title while also leaning into the academic profile that separates Cornell from most of the sport’s recruiting field. There is also a clearer path to early playing time than many prospects find at his position, with Labrum seen as someone who could compete for the starting job as a true freshman.

The commitment also fits Cornell’s broader arc under Swanstrom, who was hired in December 2023 after going 32-11 in five seasons at Ithaca College and winning three league titles and three Cortaca crowns. Cornell finished 4-6 overall and 3-4 in Ivy League play in Swanstrom’s first season in 2024, then improved offensively in 2025 by averaging 221.7 passing yards per game and ranking fourth in the Ivy League in passing. Labrum gives the Big Red a quarterback with production, poise and upside, a combination that can anchor a program trying to rise nationally without sacrificing its academic edge.
