Jackson State unveils 2026 11-game schedule with Week 0 Nissan Stadium opener
Jackson State announced an 11-game 2026 schedule that opens Week 0 at Nissan Stadium against Tennessee State, highlighting four classics and five home games at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Jackson State will kick off the 2026 season with a Week 0 neutral-site game at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, renewing the John A. Merritt Classic against Tennessee State on Aug. 29. The decision to open in an NFL venue gives the Tigers an early spotlight and continues a tradition-rich HBCU matchup after a four-season pause; the teams last met in a 16-3 Jackson State victory.
The full slate, released Feb. 1, comprises 11 regular-season games with five played at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson and two scheduled bye weeks on Sept. 12 and Oct. 31. Jackson State’s nonconference slate contains no FBS opponents; the Tigers will face Division II programs Edward Waters and Tuskegee, the former meeting a first in school history on Sept. 5 at the Hope Labor Day Classic. The itinerary features four named classics: the John A. Merritt Classic, the Hope Labor Day Classic, the W.C. Gorden Classic against Tuskegee on Sept. 19, and the Gulf Coast Challenge vs Alabama A&M on Oct. 3 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.

Coach T.C. Taylor inherits a schedule that balances tradition and conference rigor after Jackson State finished 2025 at 9-3 overall and 7-1 in SWAC play, falling 23-21 to Prairie View A&M in the conference title game. The SWAC slate includes Southern, Alabama A&M, Grambling State, Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman, Mississippi Valley State, Alabama State, and archrival Alcorn State in the Soul Bowl on Nov. 21 in Lorman. The Sept. 26 game against Southern is the conference opener; the all-time series stands tied at 36-36, but Jackson State has won the last seven meetings. The Tigers carry favorable recent series trends into 2026, including four straight wins against Bethune-Cookman, five straight over Alabama A&M, and a lopsided historical record versus Mississippi Valley State at 57-5-1. Jackson State has also won five of the last six against Alcorn State, though the Soul Bowl remains a season-defining matchup.
From a business and cultural perspective, the schedule emphasizes HBCU pageantry and regional draw rather than high-profile FBS paydays. Playing a Week 0 game in an NFL stadium and staging multiple classics offers recruiting exposure, donor engagement opportunities, and ticket revenue potential while keeping marquee rivalries and community traditions front and center. The absence of an FBS opponent likely reduces a guaranteed payout but preserves a calendar heavy with home games and neutral-site showcases that appeal to the program’s fan base and alumni network.
Next steps for fans and stakeholders include formal kickoff times and television assignments, which Jackson State plans to announce later and will update on its schedule page. For Taylor and the Tigers, the 2026 slate is both a test and a stage: it provides early national visibility at Nissan Stadium, a home stretch loaded with rivalry implications, and a clear runway to build off last season’s 9-3 campaign.
