JUCO All-American Linebacker Carson Cox Commits to Portland State Vikings
Carson Cox racked up 86 tackles and JUCO All-America honors at Santa Monica College before committing to Portland State on March 10 to help rebuild the Vikings program.

Eighty-six tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, a sack, and a pass breakup in a single season was enough to make Carson Cox one of the most decorated junior college defenders in the country. It was also enough to land him at the Division I level, where the 2025 JUCO All-American linebacker committed to the Portland State Vikings on March 10 after two dominant seasons with the Santa Monica College Corsairs.
Cox turned down Division II offers from Colorado State-Pueblo and Western Colorado, as well as FCS programs Stetson and Long Island, before choosing Portland State. The deciding factors, by his own account, were equal parts mission and geography.
"One of the things that stood out to me about Portland State is that the program is in a similar position to where Santa Monica was before I arrived," Cox said. "Being part of turning that program around at SMC was very special, and I want to help do the same thing at the Division I level. I also wanted to stay on the West Coast, and I've heard nothing but great things about the city of Portland."
The parallel Cox draws is pointed. He arrived at Santa Monica as part of a Corsairs program that needed rebuilding and left as an All-American instrumental in that turnaround. Portland State, under head coach Chris Fisk, is at a similar crossroads, and Cox sees himself filling an analogous role at the next level.

The recruitment was built primarily through relationships with defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Grant Torgerson and director of player personnel Brady Crane. Cox has not yet met Fisk in person, though that meeting is expected once he arrives in Portland to begin working with the staff.
The journey to that commitment was not without stress. "The recruiting process was definitely nerve-racking at times, but I'm very grateful and blessed for all the opportunities I received from the schools that recruited me," Cox said.
Landing a JUCO All-American with a proven stat line gives Portland State a credible early return on its rebuilding investment. The Vikings will be counting on transfers like Cox to accelerate that process, and his stated buy-in to the program's long-term trajectory makes him more than just a production addition. He is arriving with a specific purpose in mind, and he has already done this once before.
