Western Illinois landed a quarterback who can change the shape of its rebuild, and maybe its depth chart, when Mack Heitland of Waukee Northwest committed to the Leathernecks over Northern Iowa and other suitors.

Heitland brings the kind of production that gets a staff’s attention fast. In 2025, the all-state quarterback completed 202 of 254 passes for 2,962 yards, 28 touchdowns and no interceptions, while adding 164 rushing yards and four more scores on 35 carries. Waukee Northwest finished 10-2 and reached the Iowa Class 5A semifinals, and Heitland’s profile only grew from there with a 213.9 QBR, an Elite 11 invite, a Dallas regional appearance, and 5A District 1 Offensive Player of the Year honors.

For Western Illinois, the fit matters as much as the numbers. Joe Davis took over as the program’s 32nd head coach on December 10, 2023, and the Leathernecks said his 2024 team posted the program’s most wins since 2017 along with a winning home record. Adding a Midwest quarterback with a track record of efficiency gives Davis a real chance to build around high school development instead of leaning on portal patchwork.

Heitland’s recruitment took a turn on April 2, when Western Illinois offered after Davis evaluated his film and highlighted his multi-sport background. The visit to Macomb on April 18 pushed the Leathernecks to the front. Heitland saw a campus that felt close-knit, noticed the golf course near campus, met the full staff, and watched practice before leaving impressed by the energy and the offense being installed.

That matters for a program trying to regain footing in the Missouri Valley footprint. Heitland did not just choose a school. He chose a staff he trusted, and a place where football appeared to matter to the people around it. For Western Illinois, beating Northern Iowa for an in-region quarterback who was productive, accurate and mistake-free is the kind of win that can ripple through the rest of a class.

Heitland is listed as a junior in 2025-26, which gives Western Illinois time to keep building around him. If Davis and his staff can turn this commitment into a pattern, not a one-off, the Leathernecks may finally be assembling a quarterback room that grows from within instead of being assembled on the fly.
