The University of Rhode Island announced a $2 million gift from alumni Mark S. Cruise ’81 ’84 and Sue Cruise ’84 that will establish a new athletic endowment and put the university on track to rename the Rams’ football practice field in the Cruises’ honor. The cash infusion is the largest single monetary gift in URI football program history and splits into a $1.5 million endowed scholarship fund and $500,000 for facility improvements tied to Meade Stadium and the football locker rooms.

The $1.5 million will seed the Mark & Sue Cruise Endowed Scholarship program, which will provide an annual award to a student in financial need who demonstrates academic and athletic achievement, with preference for a football player from the area of Cruise’s hometown of Brockton, Mass. University leaders framed the award as a targeted way to recruit and retain players who embody the blue-collar traits founders say Cruise represents. The remaining $500,000 is earmarked to support upcoming renovations to Meade Stadium and upgrades to the Rams’ locker-room space.

Interim Athletic Director Brittney Miles praised the Cruises’ investment in the program and the long-term effect scholarship support can have on players’ lives. “Mark and Sue Cruise’s gift is a powerful testament to the meaningful experiences student-athletes can have at the University of Rhode Island. Mark understands what it means to get a scholarship to come play here and shaping who he is speaks volumes to help us maintain the primary purpose and goal to succeed in life after graduating. This will have a major impact for many generations of football players here, and we are so grateful for their significant contribution and ongoing support for URI,” Miles said.

Head coach Jim Fleming stressed the gift’s messaging value for recruiting and program culture, noting Cruise’s own Rams pedigree. “To me, Mark Cruise represents everything that defines the University of Rhode Island football experience. He committed fully to the University, excelled on the field, and earned a high-quality education. This donation validates our program and underscores the importance of football at URI. Mark has been incredibly supportive every step of the way, and we hope his generosity shows our student-athletes that his URI football experience was meaningful and worth giving back to. I can’t thank him enough,” Fleming said. Fleming added that Cruise’s legacy will be literalized on campus: the planned new designation is the Mark S. Cruise ’81 ’84 Football Practice Field, pending required approvals.

Mark Cruise is a URI Athletic Hall of Famer and a noted Rams performer from the 1980s and has been highlighted by coaches as an example to recruits who come from large families and limited means. University and foundation messaging around the gift framed it as both a material boost for scholarships, roster flexibility and facilities, and a symbolic nudge to donors to “pay it forward.”

Administrative steps remain before the practice field name is finalized; the renaming is subject to approval by the URI Board of Trustees and the Rhode Island General Assembly. For Rams followers, the endowment increases predictable scholarship support for players, tightens recruiting narratives built around alumni success, and channels immediate capital into Meade Stadium and locker-room improvements. Next steps will include formal approvals and implementation details from the Foundation and athletics department, along with the selection process and timing for the inaugural scholarship recipient.
