Missouri moves 2026 opener to Week 0 Thursday, hosts Arkansas Pine Bluff
Missouri moved its 2026 opener vs. Arkansas‑Pine Bluff from Sept. 5 to Sept. 3, kicking off at 7 p.m. CT on SEC Network and marking the first game in front of the remodeled north end zone.

The University of Missouri announced on Feb. 24 that the 2026 season-opener against Arkansas‑Pine Bluff was moved from Saturday, Sept. 5 to Thursday, Sept. 3, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. CT (8:00 p.m. ET) at Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium and a national broadcast on the SEC Network. The school noted this will be the first meeting between the two programs and the opening game will be played in front of the remodeled north end zone.
Head coach Eli Drinkwitz framed the shift as part of a developing tradition and a media opportunity, saying, "Opening the season on a Thursday night in CoMo is becoming a great tradition for our program." Drinkwitz added, "We appreciate Arkansas‑Pine Bluff and the SEC for working with us on the adjustment so our season opener can be broadcast nationally on SEC Network. There’s nothing like a renovated and full Memorial Stadium to kick off a season, and we’re excited to carry our program-record sellout streak into 2026."
The move continues a pattern of Thursday-night openers in Columbia. This will be Missouri’s fifth consecutive Thursday night season-opener following games vs. Louisiana Tech in 2022, South Dakota in 2023, Murray State in 2024 and Central Arkansas in 2025. Missouri is 4-0 on Thursday night openers, and the athletics department highlighted that the Sept. 3 kickoff will represent the ninth weeknight home game since 2015.
The announcement ties directly to stadium work and revenue implications. The 2026 opener will mark the official opening of the renovated north end zone concourse as part of the $250 million Memorial Stadium Centennial Project, construction that Columbia reporting says has been underway since the end of the 2024 campaign. The Columbia Daily Tribune noted the stadium may have a corporate sponsor and a new official name by Sept. 3, an outcome that would carry naming-rights and sponsorship revenue implications for the athletics department. Season-ticket operations remain active; Missouri is accepting additions to the 2026 season ticket waitlist and set a renewal deadline of Tuesday, March 31.
Arkansas‑Pine Bluff arrives as an FCS opponent from the SWAC. The Golden Lions finished 4-8 in 2025 and will play under head coach Alonzo Hampton, who is entering his fourth season with a 9-26 record in Pine Bluff. FBSchedules identified UAPB as the Golden Lions and highlighted the matchup as Missouri’s first meeting with the program.
Drinkwitz’s longer-term rationale for early openers has been public since an April 2025 press conference. As reported by Sporting News, he said, "The strategic part is we get to open (fall) camp three days earlier. It gives us an opportunity to play that first game and gives us an extra time to prepare for our Week 2 opponent (Kansas), which is a pretty important game for us in the state." He also cited fan travel patterns tied to Labor Day weekend and the Lake of the Ozarks and the recruiting and branding benefits of being a prominent Thursday night presence on national television.
A minor inconsistency among outlets bears noting for final edits: the official communications list the shift as two calendar days earlier from Sept. 5 to Sept. 3, while one syndicated piece used the phrase "three days" in describing the timing. Columbia and Missouri communications also reference seven home dates in Columbia for 2026 but public listings in local coverage enumerate six opponents in excerpts. Before finalizing season logistics, Missouri and the SEC should confirm the full 2026 game-by-game designations, the stadium’s official naming status, and the renovated concourse opening date. For now, fans can mark Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. CT on SEC Network as Columbia’s primetime season kickoff.
