MSU-NDSU 2027 Vegas Kickoff Confirmed Despite FBS Shift
Montana State and NDSU will face off at Allegiant Stadium in 2027, each banking a record $1.25M guarantee as the Bison open FBS life against the defending FCS champions.

A $1.25 million guarantee, a national ESPN broadcast, and a Labor Day stage at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas: Montana State's 2027 Vegas Kickoff Classic matchup with North Dakota State represents the largest participation fee in Bobcat program history, according to athletic director Leon Costello. When NDSU athletic director Matt Larsen confirmed on March 25 that the game is proceeding despite NDSU's move to the Football Bowl Subdivision, he locked in what has become the most layered season opener in FCS football.
Both programs will receive their $1.25 million from ESPN Productions, Inc. Once local ticket sales clear a net of $3.3 million, Montana State, NDSU, and ESPN Events will each split one-third of additional net revenue. The financial terms dwarf previous benchmarks for both programs. NDSU received $740,000 for its matchup against Deion Sanders' Colorado last season, its previous record; the Bison's 2027 payout will be the largest in school history regardless of conference level.
The game was originally announced in August 2025 when both programs were FCS powerhouses, Montana State as the Big Sky's defending national champion and NDSU as the Missouri Valley Football Conference's most decorated program. NDSU's subsequent invitation to the Mountain West Conference threatened to complicate matters. The signed contract included language stating: "This agreement shall remain enforceable regardless of Conference affiliation or NCAA football classification." The Mountain West also helped smooth out broadcast logistics with ESPN's media partners.
For fans, the appeal is a destination event with genuine stakes. Montana State and NDSU have met six times since 2010, every meeting in the FCS playoffs, including national championship games to close the 2021 and 2024 seasons. The Bison have won all six. The Bobcats are the current defending FCS national champions; NDSU holds 10 FCS titles entering its first FBS season.
Those credentials turn a neutral-site opener into something with lasting implications. A Montana State win in 2027 would instantly sharpen the Bobcats' playoff résumé with an FBS scalp heading into Big Sky play. For NDSU, launching Mountain West life with a loss to the FCS defending champions would invite scrutiny that follows a program through an entire debut season. The game date and broadcast window within the Sept. 2-4 weekend have yet to be announced.
The 2027 Vegas Kickoff Classic weekend also features the "Battle of the U" between the Miami Hurricanes and Utah Utes on Saturday, September 4, at Allegiant Stadium. ESPN Events has scheduled a 2029 return engagement in the same series: South Dakota State will face Montana, extending the Missouri Valley-Big Sky crossover on the most visible non-conference stage the event calendar offers.
