When Sacramento State announced its departure for the Mid-American Conference, it didn't just hollow out the Missouri Valley Football Conference's membership. It handed two programs a September collision that could determine who earns home playoff games in November.

The MVFC announced three revisions to its 2026 conference schedule, with the headline move sending Youngstown State's trip to South Dakota State from October 24 to September 19. Youngstown State had been scheduled to visit Sacramento State on that exact date, but as the conference stated in its update, "that game was canceled following Sac State's realignment move." Murray State's schedule absorbed two corresponding adjustments: its game at South Dakota State shifted from October 10 to October 24, and its open week flipped from October 24 to October 10 to rebalance conference spacing.

The revisions mark the second time the MVFC has overhauled its 2026 slate. The league issued its first revised schedule last month after North Dakota State opted to join the Mountain West Conference, then issued these three additional changes once Sacramento State's move to the MAC finalized. Two departures, two rounds of reconstruction.

The September 19 date carries stakes that a late-October game would not. South Dakota State, a program that has set the standard for FCS dominance over the past several seasons with multiple national championships, now faces a credentialed MVFC opponent within its first month of play. Youngstown State, meanwhile, opens Thursday, August 27 against Mercyhurst at home, then travels to Brookings less than four weeks later with limited conference film to scout against.

That timing matters in ways that don't fully register until seeding decisions are made in November. MVFC tiebreakers run through head-to-head results when programs finish with identical conference records, and a Week 3 outcome between two perennial contenders can hang over the standings for 10 consecutive weeks. A win on September 19 is leverage a program carries into December bracket discussions; a loss requires a flawless late-season run just to force a recount.

The schedule shift also opens financial and competitive possibilities. Youngstown State now carries open dates on October 24 and November 21. South Dakota State holds open dates on August 29 and October 10. The MVFC confirmed both programs can still schedule an additional game to reach 12 total contests, leaving room for an FBS buy game or a non-conference addition on either side of the ledger.

The reader response to the revised slate was immediate. One fan commenting on the MVFC's updated schedule page noted: "UMaine should invite South Dakota State to travel over for October 10. UMaine also lost its 12th game when Sacramento State ditched FCS for MAC." The comment captures how Sacramento State's move continues creating scheduling vacuums across FCS programs that had built their calendars around the Hornets.

The full revised conference-only MVFC schedule, updated March 26, opens with an August 27 Thursday slate that includes Mercyhurst at Youngstown State, LIU at North Dakota, and Eastern Illinois at Murray State. Kickoff times and television assignments for the revised September 19 matchup have not yet been announced.
