NFL Scouts Watch Texas Southern Players Shine at Prairie View Pro Day

Five Texas Southern Tigers traveled to Prairie View, Texas on Tuesday morning to work out in front of Houston Texans scouts, capping a breakthrough season with a formal audition for the professional level. Charles George Jr., Trenton Leary, Eric Whitley, Kerirn Charlo and Jalen Williams made the trip to Prairie View A&M, where Prairie View Panthers players also took the field alongside them.

George turned in the most complete statistical performance of the TSU group. The 6-foot-4 linebacker recorded a 9-foot-8 broad jump, completed the 5-10-5 shuttle, and clocked a 4.4-second 40-yard dash. He is also scheduled to attend the HBCU Combine later this month in Ashburn, Virginia, giving him a second opportunity to impress evaluators in a concentrated window.

The host school produced the day's most electric moment. Prairie View A&M safety Jaylon Shelton, listed at 6-foot-2, ran a 4.3-second 40-yard dash that drew loud reactions from teammates watching on the sideline. Shelton's speed reads even more impressive alongside his 2025 season line: 23 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and one pass defended across 12 games. Wide receiver Trejon Spiller and defensive lineman Fred Stokes also represented the Panthers at the workout.

The pro day came on the heels of a historic TSU season in which the Tigers recorded their first winning record in more than two decades, a turnaround that has directly fueled this wave of professional interest in the program's players.

Tight end Jalen Williams brought a rigorous preparation standard into the session. Williams trains six days a week, often with multiple sessions per day, and frames his pursuit of the professional level as a daily standard rather than a distant target. His self-assessment after the workout reflected that same unsparing mindset. "Today was decent, I could've done way better. But at the end of the day, I'm proud of myself," Williams said. He also took time to recognize teammates who performed well despite limited preparation time, a gesture that underscored both his standing within the program and what TSU has built around him.

The event drew a broader HBCU presence beyond just the two host schools. Players from Florida A&M, Jackson State, Howard, South Carolina State, Norfolk State, Grambling State, Alabama State, Virginia Union, Morgan State and more than a dozen other programs also participated, with HBCUsports documenting the full roster of attendees. For George specifically, the calendar ahead is full: the HBCU Combine in Ashburn gives him a chance to build on Tuesday's results before scouts finalize their pre-draft evaluations.
