North Carolina Central unveils 2026 football slate, adds new foes, skips classics
North Carolina Central released a 12-game 2026 football schedule with a Week 0 opener at Texas Southern, six home dates and no HBCU classics - a notable shift for fans and program exposure.

North Carolina Central unveiled a 12-game 2026 football slate that opens in Week 0 at Texas Southern and features six home games at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, the most home dates for the Eagles since 2017. The schedule, announced by head coach Trei Oliver as he enters his eighth season, balances early non-conference tests with a compact five-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference run after a bye week.
The early portion of the slate sets up a fast start: the Eagles travel to Texas Southern on Aug. 29, host Elizabeth City State on Sept. 5, and welcome rival North Carolina A&T to Durham on Sept. 12 for the 98th edition of that series as NCCU chases a fifth consecutive victory in the matchup. North Carolina Central then travels to Gardner-Webb on Sept. 19 and faces an FBS opponent, East Carolina, on Sept. 26 in a marquee non-conference challenge.
NCCU’s homecoming will be Oct. 10, when William & Mary visits Durham for the first time as part of the school’s Homecoming week; the homecoming kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The athletics department also pairs the Campbell game with its Hall of Fame matchup, though the published date for Campbell appears out of sequence in one schedule listing and should be confirmed with official athletics channels.
After a bye, the Eagles begin a five-game MEAC grind that includes road trips to Delaware State (Oct. 24), Norfolk State (Nov. 7) and South Carolina State (Nov. 14), and home contests against Howard (Oct. 31) and Morgan State (Nov. 21). The regular season closes Nov. 21 vs. Morgan State, a series matchup that has deep history between the programs. NCCU sports information notes the Eagles will face five first-year head coaches in 2026, including Gardner-Webb’s Kris McCullough, adding another variable to an already creative non-conference slate.

The release carries both tactical and cultural implications. On the field, the schedule mixes manageable opponents with one clear FBS test and several familiar FCS rivals, allowing Coach Oliver to schedule for resume-building wins while measuring the roster against higher-level competition. Ncfootballnews framed the slate as “a rich mix” that includes “two brand new opponents, a trio of in-state FCS foes, a former CIAA rival and an FBS challenge,” highlighting the program’s proactive scheduling posture. The program’s active streaks versus several 2026 opponents - eight straight vs Elizabeth City State and Morgan State, five vs Norfolk State, four vs NC A&T, and shorter streaks against Howard and Campbell - tilt some matchups toward expectation rather than surprise.
Off the field, the absence of HBCU classics for the first time since 2019 is the most consequential change for visibility and revenue. Observers have noted skipping classics could affect recruiting exposure, broadcast opportunities and marquee-event gate receipts, and NCCU will need to lean on home scheduling and the homecoming platform to maintain that cultural and financial momentum.
Practical follow-ups include confirming the Campbell date anomaly, finalizing kickoff times and television or streaming assignments, and seeking reaction from Coach Oliver and the athletic department on the strategic choice to forgo classics while piling home dates into the 2026 calendar.
