South Dakota State loads 2026 schedule with seven home games, FBS test at Northwestern

Seven home dates give South Dakota State a 2026 layout built for a contender, but did the Jackrabbits carve out a bracket-friendly path that protects another national-title push?

The schedule opens Aug. 29 against Stetson at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, where South Dakota State will try to start fast in front of a 19,340-seat crowd. One week later comes the lone FBS trip, a Sept. 5 visit to Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois, a measuring-stick game that offers real payoff without dragging the Jackrabbits into a brutal two-game Power Four stretch. New Haven follows in Brookings on Sept. 12, then Youngstown State on Sept. 19 and Eastern Illinois on Sept. 26, giving South Dakota State four straight home dates to build momentum before Missouri Valley Football Conference play fully takes over.

That home-heavy setup is no accident. Head coach Dan Jackson said the goal was to give the program the best chance to reach its goals and to "sell out Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium seven times." The first four home dates all come with August and September 6 p.m. kickoffs, a nod to atmosphere as much as convenience, and the late-season home windows shift to 2 p.m. starts unless television changes them.

The games most likely to shape the Jackrabbits’ playoff résumé come after the nonconference slate. South Dakota State opens its eight-game MVFC run Oct. 3 at Illinois State in Normal, Illinois, then gets an open date on Oct. 10 before the league grind accelerates. The Oct. 17 trip to North Dakota, the Oct. 31 Interstate Series meeting with South Dakota, and the Nov. 14 road game at Southern Illinois all look like the sort of matchups that can move a seed line in December. Hobo Day against Murray State on Oct. 24 adds one of the program’s biggest home events, while the finale against Indiana State on Nov. 21 closes a stretch that leaves little room for missteps.

The broader picture is clear: South Dakota State finished 2025 at 9-5, reached the FCS playoffs for the 14th straight season, and still carries the weight of back-to-back national championships in 2022 and 2023. Jackson also thanked president Barry Dunn and athletic director Justin Sell for their support, underscoring that this schedule was treated as an institutional priority, not just a football decision. New Haven’s trip to Brookings adds the intrigue of a Division I newcomer, while the reported $300,000 guarantee attached to that game shows how the Jackrabbits are using the nonconference calendar to strengthen both their profile and their bank account.
