Hall of Fame coach Bruce Dockery returns to lead Memorial girls basketball

Evansville Memorial turned to Bruce Dockery as its interim girls basketball coach in a July 21 move that put one of Indiana’s most decorated high school coaches back on the sideline. For a program in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference, the hire brings immediate familiarity and a trusted voice while Memorial sorts out its next long-term direction.

Dockery’s return carries unusual weight because he is not a stopgap from outside the program. He spent his entire 31-year varsity coaching career at Evansville Reitz Memorial High School, finished with 502 wins and remains the sixth all-time winningest Indiana girls basketball coach. The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame inducted him in 2023, the same recognition that followed decades of success at Memorial and put his name among the state’s most respected coaching figures.

His résumé explains why the appointment feels like more than routine turnover. Dockery won eight SIAC Coach of the Year honors, five District Coach of the Year awards, eight conference titles, 14 sectional championships, six regional crowns and two semistate titles, along with one state runner-up finish. The Hall of Fame profile also notes Memorial’s 2011 team went 28-1 and won the Class 3A state championship in overtime, a benchmark that still defines the program’s standard.

For Memorial, the interim tag suggests both urgency and stability. The school gets someone who already understands the routines, expectations and demands of girls basketball in Vanderburgh County, and that matters in a league where every coaching change is scrutinized. Families and supporters around the program can look at the move as a sign that Memorial wants continuity for its players, especially through offseason workouts and the build toward winter competition.

Dockery has remained tied to the school’s basketball identity for years. A 2019 story announced his retirement after a 31-year run, and local coverage has continued to frame him as a foundational figure for Memorial basketball. In 2026, Memorial dedicated Bruce Dockery Court inside the Robert M. Kent Athletic Center, another marker of how deeply his name is woven into the program’s history.
