Hobart names new head boys basketball coach

Hobart has named Jacob Viehman as its next head boys basketball coach, giving the Brickies a new leader as the program moves into offseason work and prepares for the 2026-27 school year. Hobart High School and the Brickies athletic department made the announcement Thursday evening, and Hobart Brickie Athletics also identified Viehman as the next head boys basketball coach of the Brickies.

The move comes after Devon Key will not return next season, a change that resets the program’s direction at a time when summer workouts, weight room sessions and team meetings shape much of what shows up in November. Viehman arrives with assistant coaching experience already on his résumé, and the immediate task now is turning that background into a clear identity for returning varsity players and the younger athletes trying to climb into the rotation.

Hobart’s varsity opening is not just another coaching vacancy. The school competes in the Northwest Crossroads Conference and Class 4A Sectional 2, which puts the Brickies in a rugged competitive lane where quick buy-in and clean structure matter from the first week of practice. The head coach job posting for Hobart also spells out what the program expects from its leader: communicate effectively with administration, players, parents, community and media, while creating positive experiences for student-athletes.

That emphasis points to what changes now for Hobart. Viehman inherits not only a roster to evaluate, but also the responsibility of setting the tone for offseason attendance, development and accountability. For a program with community visibility, the first public signal of that transition was already clear in Hobart Boys Basketball’s own outreach, which posted: “Meet the Coach Viehman, get connected with the team, and learn more about the upcoming season.”

The hire drew immediate attention around Indiana basketball circles as well. Mason Williams posted on X that Hobart hired Jake Viehman to lead Brickies boys basketball, while another social post from the school and athletic department repeated the same message with Viehman’s full name. However it is labeled, the message is the same for Hobart: a new coach is in place, the offseason is underway, and the Brickies now begin the work of defining what their program looks like under Jacob Viehman.
