Mahurin returns to THS, ready to lead alma mater back into coaching

Dave Mahurin is back at Terre Haute South, and the Terre Haute School Board approved the 61-year-old to take over the boys basketball program after Braydon Jefferson stepped down in March. Jefferson finished 12-37 over his final two seasons, so this hire is not just a reunion. It is a reset for a program that needs a sharper edge and a steadier ledger.

The homecoming matters because Mahurin is not walking into a blank slate. He is returning to his alma mater with the kind of résumé that turns every decision into a test of whether he can deliver on the expectations that come with the name. Mahurin picked up career win No. 400 against Evansville Memorial earlier this year, and he now owns 402 career wins and five state titles. Those numbers explain why South moved quickly, but they also raise the bar. Alumni coaches do not get the luxury of being evaluated like outsiders.

Mahurin spent the previous four seasons at Vincennes Lincoln, where he went 42-58, and he stepped down because of health issues. Before that, he coached at Edgewood and later resigned after a 2016 arrest in Monroe County on misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with endangerment and possession of marijuana or hashish. His coaching path has had detours, but it has also produced enough wins, titles and hard lessons to make this appointment consequential for Terre Haute South.

On his TeamPages site, Mahurin said his primary goals at Terre Haute South are organization, consistency and accountability. Those three words fit the challenge in front of him. South is not asking for nostalgia, it is asking for structure after a 12-37 stretch under Jefferson. Mahurin returns to a school that already knows him, but the standard now is higher than familiarity. At his alma mater, the pressure is to make the program look like it knows exactly where it is going.
