314 Trainers Accepted for 2026 Thoroughbred Makeover at Kentucky Horse Park
The Retired Racehorse Project has accepted 314 trainers, and 314 horses, for the 2026 Thoroughbred Makeover, with late applications accepted on a rolling basis through June 26 and horse registration closing July 31.

The Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) has accepted 314 trainers to compete in the 2026 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, with those trainers signed up to bring a total of 314 horses to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington for the Oct. 7-10 event. "As of this writing, a total of 314 trainers have been accepted, signing up to bring a total of 314 horses; these numbers are expected to grow as late applications are processed," RRP noted in its announcement carried by Therrp.
Applications for trainer slots followed an initial deadline of Friday, January 23 at 5 PM EST; RRP posted on Facebook Jan. 20 that "It's the LAST WEEK to get your applications in for the 2026 Thoroughbred Makeover! Applications are due by Friday, January 23 at 5 PM EST. (Late applications will be accepted, but will include a late fee.)" Organizers later clarified that late applications will continue to be accepted "on a rolling basis now through June 26, 2026," giving prospective entrants a multi-month window to join the field at a cost that includes a late fee.
Horse registration operates on a separate timeline. Therrp's Feb. 17 item urged participants to register horses "as soon as they acquire them, with horse registration closing on July 31, 2026." That sweep of deadlines means trainers who secure mounts after the January application cutoff still have two deadlines to navigate: the June 26 late-application cutoff for entry processing and the July 31 deadline for final horse identification.

The Makeover, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America, will distribute $135,000 in prize money and is billed by RRP and Therrp as "the largest and most lucrative retraining competition in North America for recently-retired racehorses and former broodmares, awarding $135,000 in prize money." Coverage of the announcement ran in mid-February across multiple outlets; Therrp carried the Makeover item Feb. 10 and Feb. 17, and Paulick Report published related announcement and supplemental details on Feb. 17-18.
RRP amplified the entry announcement through social channels: the Jan. 20 Facebook post shown in RRP’s feed recorded 31 reactions, 1 comment and 16 shares, and attracted fan responses such as Paula Jo Pierce’s line, "This photo says it all about the heart of an OTTB... affectionate, loyal to those they trust...." A Therrp photo accompanying the Feb. 17 item is credited to Captivation Media.

With 314 trainer-and-horse pairs already on the roster and late-entry windows open through June 26 plus horse registration closing July 31, the field for the Kentucky Horse Park competition remains fluid. Organizers say the final composition of the Makeover field will be determined as late applications are processed and horse registrations are finalized ahead of the Oct. 7-10 competition.
