Azleet Stuns Nell Gwyn at 50-1, Upends 1,000 Guineas Picture
Azleet, a 50-1 outsider, swept from last to beat America Queen by a neck and suddenly entered the 1,000 Guineas conversation.

Azleet turned the G3 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes into a Classic shock, coming from last in a 12-runner field to beat America Queen by a neck in 1:25.08 at Newmarket. Act Of Kindness finished third, but the biggest message came from the winner’s 50-1 price tag, which made the result one of the day’s most disruptive performances for the British fillies’ division.
Ridden by Marco Ghiani and trained by Stuart Williams, Azleet had already shown enough ability to win two of her seven juvenile starts, but the step up to Group company had not yet produced a breakthrough. By Tasleet out of Azure Mist, and owned by David Noblett and partner, she answered every question over seven furlongs with a late burst that carried her past better-fancied rivals and straight into the early 1,000 Guineas picture.
That matters because the Nell Gwyn is not just another spring trial. It has long been one of Newmarket’s key pointers to the 1,000 Guineas, which was first run in 1814 and is staged over a mile at the Rowley Mile for three-year-old fillies. Williams made clear before the race that the plan was to find out whether Azleet was good enough for a Guineas entry, and the answer changed fast once Ghiani settled her at the back and asked for her effort late. Williams said afterwards he would “roll the dice” in the 1,000 Guineas.
The win also carried a market jolt. Sporting Life reported that Azleet was cut to 25-1 for the Betfred 1000 Guineas after the race, a sharp reaction to a filly who had been largely overlooked going in. That shift is more than a betting adjustment. It reflects how quickly a strong performance in a recognized Classic trial can reshape expectations, upgrade a pedigree page, and alter the spring plans of a stable that does not usually operate with this kind of firepower.
There was also a clear horsemanship angle behind the upset. Williams’ yard had been practicing in the stalls at home because Azleet had been prone to rearing up, a reminder that this was not just a talent story but a preparation story as well. America Queen, under Richard Hughes, will head to France for the French Guineas instead of returning to Newmarket, after Hughes felt she stayed the seven furlongs well. Even so, the day belonged to Azleet, who left Newmarket with a Group 3 win, a live Guineas ticket, and the kind of result that forces the market to rethink the whole division.
