Barber Road delights fans as stable pony for Johnny Ortiz at Keeneland

Barber Road has found a second career that keeps him in the spotlight at Keeneland, where the gray or roan gelding has been delighting fans as a stable pony in Johnny Ortiz’s barn. The 2019 Kentucky-bred once ran in the 2022 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve and the Belmont Stakes, but his daily role now puts him at the center of morning traffic, not the starting gate.

That shift has given racing followers a fresh way to connect with a familiar horse. Barber Road accompanied Quietside during training at Keeneland, and he has been seen around the track in the same 2022 Kentucky Derby saddle towel that marked his big-race appearance. For casual fans, the sight of a Derby starter leading a future Kentucky Oaks hopeful to the track turned a routine workout into a memorable scene.

Barber Road’s resume made the transition especially meaningful. He was a three-time graded-stakes placed runner, and his racing record included a $30,000 claiming win at Keeneland on Oct. 14, 2021. He returned to the same track and won again on April 15, 2023 by a neck for trainer John Ortiz, improving to 2-for-2 at Keeneland. Long before that, he had been purchased for just $15,000 at the Keeneland November sale as a weanling for WSS Racing and owner William Simon, a bargain that proved durable on the track.

The horse’s path through racing and repurposed stable life also fit the story of Ortiz himself. John Ortiz, a former Elmont resident and the son of jockey Carlos Ortiz, has built a barn around horses that can matter in more than one way, and Barber Road became a visible part of that identity. His presence in the shed row carried the kind of full-circle appeal that racing often needs, a recognizable name still helping shape the atmosphere even after the Derby dream had passed.
