Bella Ballerina sharpens Oaks bid with strong Keeneland five-furlong work
Bella Ballerina's 1:01.8 Keeneland drill kept her on the same Walsh-Gaffalione path that produced Pretty Mischievous, with one work left before Churchill Downs.

Bella Ballerina stayed on course for the 152nd Kentucky Oaks with a five-furlong move in 1:01.8 at Keeneland, a steady step that fit Brendan Walsh’s measured plan more than a final, all-out test. For a filly already established in graded company, the bigger question now is timing: whether Walsh can have her ready for the 1 1/8-mile, $1.5 million Oaks on Friday, May 1, without asking too much too soon.
The work came in company on a fast track, with Diamond Eyed Jack and Get Them Roses, and Walsh said the drill was comfortable and educational. That is the kind of pattern serious Oaks contenders often follow in the last stages of the prep season: keep the filly sharp, keep her relaxed, then give her one more serious move before the ship to Churchill Downs. Bella Ballerina is set to have one more work at Keeneland before a final breeze at Churchill Downs, the last pieces of a preparation aimed at delivering her to Louisville with a full tank.
Her résumé already reads like that of a legitimate contender. Bella Ballerina won the Golden Rod Stakes, a Grade 2 worth $397,375, at Churchill Downs on Nov. 29, 2025, then added the Rachel Alexandra Stakes at Fair Grounds during her 3-year-old campaign. She came into the Keeneland work off a runner-up finish in the Fair Grounds Oaks, another sign that her form has held through the winter and spring rather than peaking once and flattening out.

The family history makes the comparison even sharper. Bella Ballerina is a half-sister to Pretty Mischievous, the Godolphin homebred who won the 149th Kentucky Oaks on May 5, 2023, by a neck over Gambling Girl. Tyler Gaffalione was aboard that day, and he has been Bella Ballerina’s regular rider, giving Walsh and Godolphin the same trusted combination as they move toward another Oaks start.
That continuity matters. With the 33-race Road to the Kentucky Oaks series having begun Sept. 13, 2025, the spring has already sorted the field into serious players and hopefuls. Bella Ballerina has done more than just qualify. She has won, she has placed, and she has kept improving in the right spots. If the next two breezes go as planned, she should arrive at Churchill Downs with the profile of a filly peaking at exactly the right moment.
