Bottle of Rouge produced a decisive stretch run to capture the $250,000 Virginia Oaks at Colonial Downs on March 14, securing the maximum 50 Kentucky Oaks qualifying points and reinforcing her status as one of the division's top 3-year-old fillies.

Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert and ridden by Flavien Prat, the daughter of Vino Rosso rallied from off the pace in the 1 1/16-mile, one-turn event to take the second running of the Virginia Oaks. The win extended a sharp sophomore campaign: Bottle of Rouge had entered the race off a 1 1/2-length victory in the Feb. 15 Sunland Park Oaks, her only prior start as a 3-year-old.

The filly's pedigree and price tag have proven a bargain. Purchased for $100,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Bottle of Rouge announced herself as a juvenile talent by winning the Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1) before finishing sixth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), both at Del Mar. The Virginia Oaks victory now positions her firmly on the Road to the May 1 Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs.

Her chief competition in the compact six-filly field came from Dazzling Dame, the 5-2 morning-line second choice trained by Brittany Russell. The Maryland-bred daughter of Girvin arrived at Colonial Downs carrying considerable momentum, having demolished the Busanda Stakes field at Aqueduct on Jan. 3 by 11 1/2 lengths while earning a field-best 90 Beyer Speed Figure. Russell had been openly impressed by that performance. "It was really impressive," she said. "She had been working really good up to the race, so we were expecting a big effort, but I'd be lying if I said I was expecting that kind of effort. Everything just worked out that day. It was a good ride. It was a good trip, and she ran huge." Owned by Respect the Valleys, Medallion Racing and Madaket Stables, Dazzling Dame had accumulated 22 Kentucky Oaks qualifying points before the Virginia Oaks and was drawn on the rail with Jevian Toledo up.

Brad Cox saddled Hit Parade, the 3-1 third choice, for owners Gary and Mary West. The homebred daughter of Street Sense won the 2025 Untapable Stakes at Fair Grounds but had finished fifth most recently in the Martha Washington Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 6. Todd Pletcher entered a pair in Kadabra, who had run third in the Suncoast Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, and Baffle, a Repole Stable-owned maiden. Irad Ortiz, Jr. was named to ride Hit Parade.

The Virginia Oaks was Race 8 on Colonial Downs' Virginia Derby Day program, which also featured the $500,000 Virginia Derby, the $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Sandy Bottom Stakes, and the $100,000 Royal New Kent Stakes. The Oaks points are distributed on a 50-25-15-10-5 scale to the top five finishers, making the winner's allocation the most consequential prize on offer beyond the purse itself.

With the 50-point haul now in hand, Bottle of Rouge's path to the Kentucky Oaks has taken a significant step forward, and the Baffert barn will almost certainly be pointing toward Louisville on May 1.
