Buetane, Baffert Headline Virginia Derby Kentucky Derby Prep This Weekend

Bob Baffert shipped Buetane east to Colonial Downs for Saturday's $500,000 Virginia Derby, where the Tiz the Law colt entered as the 5-2 morning-line favorite in a 10-horse field competing for 50 Kentucky Derby qualifying points over 1 1/8 miles around one turn in New Kent, Virginia.

Owned by Zedan Racing Stables and guided by Flavien Prat from the rail, Buetane carried a résumé that placed him squarely at the top of the field. The son of Tiz the Law broke his maiden at Del Mar by 3 1/2 lengths, finished second in last summer's G1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga, then returned at three with a runner-up effort in the G2 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 10 before settling for third in the G3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 6. According to Daily Racing Form, Buetane earned a career-best 92 Beyer Speed Figure in that stretch of graded company.

The most dangerous rival on paper was Brad Cox's Confessional, listed at 4-1 with Irad Ortiz Jr. in the irons. Confessional had broken his maiden at Keeneland in October but finished a puzzling seventh in the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in his most recent start. Cox added blinkers for the Virginia Derby, a move that signaled a deliberate tactical adjustment rather than a routine equipment change.

Todd Pletcher threw a two-horse shot at the race, entering Withers runner-up Grittiness at 12-1 with Rajiv Maragh up and Epic Desire at 15-1 under Sheldon Russell. Grittiness last ran second in the 2026 Withers, while Epic Desire finished fifth in the Sam F. Davis, the same race that tripped up Confessional.

Riley Mott's Incredibolt, a 10-1 shot with Jaime Torres aboard, brought legitimate graded credentials after winning the Street Sense Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs by 1 3/4 lengths on Oct. 26. That form, however, was undercut by a sixth-place fade in the Holy Bull (G3) on Jan. 31, leaving him needing a bounce-back performance. Will Walden's High Camp drew strong support at 9-2 with Hall of Famer John Velazquez in the saddle, while Thomas Drury Jr.'s Lockstocknpharoah was listed at 5-1. Doug O'Neill's Work, a maiden special weight winner at Santa Anita on Feb. 18, rounded out the bottom of the morning line at 20-1. Notably, Work and High Camp were the only two entrants not nominated to the Triple Crown.

The Virginia Derby, repositioned as a Kentucky Derby prep last season, was slated as Race 9 on a 10-race Virginia Derby Day program. The supporting card included the $250,000 Virginia Oaks, a Road to the Kentucky Oaks points race also offering a 50-25-15-10-5 points split, with post time set for 4:25 p.m. ET. The Virginia Derby followed at 5:10 p.m. ET. Also on the program were the $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Sandy Bottom Stakes and the $100,000 Royal New Kent Stakes, making Colonial Downs the center of the Derby prep universe for a mid-March Saturday.

With 50 points available to the winner and the Kentucky Derby trail narrowing toward May, Buetane's performance under Prat from the inside post figured to define where Baffert's colt stood among the national contenders heading into the final stretch run of prep season.
