Percy’s Bar arrives at Churchill Downs with a résumé that fits the moment, and the moment is bigger than a single filly. The 152nd Longines Kentucky Oaks will be run Friday, May 1, 2026, in primetime for the first time, with Churchill Downs putting America’s premier race for 3-year-old fillies on NBC and Peacock as it tries to turn one of racing’s signature afternoons into a national night event.

That shift is the real storyline around the Oaks. Churchill Downs’ official page lists an 8:40 p.m. ET post time, while the track’s broader 2026 announcement framed the telecast as an 8 p.m. ET primetime window. However the broadcast clock lands, the goal is clear: stretch Oaks Day beyond the grandstand crowd, widen wagering attention, and give the race a bigger television footprint at the center of Derby Week. Churchill has also said new wagers and big pools will be part of the week’s draw, a sign that the later start is about money as much as atmosphere.

Percy’s Bar gives the race a compelling focal point. She finished third in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, then returned to win the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland by 2 1/4 lengths after a five-month layoff. She has hit the exacta in all six career starts, and her final major prep looked sharp enough to hold attention, with Keeneland clocking her in :49.60 for a half-mile on April 23. Trainer Ben Colebrook has reason to believe she can keep moving forward even with the short turnaround and the stretch from 1 1/16 miles to 1 1/8 miles.

The filly also carries a story that reaches past the tote board. Percy’s Bar is owned by Hat Creek Racing, with Gatewood Bell as managing partner, and was bred by the late Brereton C. Jones, whose Kentucky Oaks record already includes Proud Spell, Believe You Can and Lovely Maria. Her name honors Percy Poole, the longtime Keeneland and Churchill bartender, which gives her a local connection that will play well when the pink hats and Lilies for the Fillies tradition fill the stands.

There is a race inside the race, too. Zany, trained by Todd Pletcher and owned by Repole Stable, will go off as the 4-1 morning-line favorite after wins in the Demoiselle Stakes and Suncoast Stakes. If Percy’s Bar can overturn that form under the lights, Churchill’s primetime experiment will get the exact kind of national-stage payoff the track is chasing.
