Churchill Downs has packed serious star power into the Derby City Distaff, and that is exactly why the race will demand attention as one of Derby Day’s sharpest betting puzzles. The 40th running of the Grade I is scheduled as Race 4 on Saturday, May 2, at 12:38 p.m. Eastern, with a $1 million purse and a field of six fillies and mares ready to shape the early part of the undercard.

The lineup features Usha, Haulin Ice, Autumn Evening, Ways and Means, Splendora and R Disaster, giving the race a blend of proven class, speed and comeback intrigue. Splendora, the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner, will arrive on a five-race win streak after her 5 3/4-length romp in the Beholder Mile, while Ways and Means will make her first start since a 7 3/4-length victory in the Bed o’ Roses last June. Those two alone give the race enough name recognition to stand with any event on the card.

The official race conditions list the Derby City Distaff at seven furlongs on dirt for fillies and mares 4 years old and up, and the pace picture should be the race’s central question. Usha will be trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Juan Hernandez, Splendora will also come from the Baffert barn with Flavien Prat aboard, Haulin Ice will be under Saffie Joseph Jr. with Francisco Arrieta, Autumn Evening will have Jose Francisco D’Angelo and Irad Ortiz Jr., and R Disaster will also represent Joseph with Tyler Gaffalione. With that kind of group, the run to the first turn and the first half-mile should tell the whole story.

The event’s profile only keeps rising around it. Derby Day will feature eight stakes, five Grade I races and $12.05 million in purses, while Churchill Downs’ 2026 Spring Meet is set for 50 stakes worth a record $27.8 million across 44 race dates from April 25 through June 28. The Derby City Distaff also carries $100,000 from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund, underscoring its place in a marquee week built around top-level money and top-level runners.

The race has long been one of Derby Day’s signature female sprint showcases, dating back to its days as the Brown and Williamson Handicap and later the Humana Distaff. Recent winners include Vahva in 2024, Matareya in 2023 and Obligatory in 2022, with Vahva’s two-length score after overtaking Alva Starr at the eighth pole serving as a reminder that this race often turns on one decisive move. This year’s edition looks just as likely to reward the horse that gets the cleanest trip at the right time.
