Commandment works sharp at Churchill, eyes Belmont Stakes at Saratoga
Commandment answered his Derby trip with a sharp four-furlong move at Churchill, keeping the Florida Derby winner on track for Saratoga’s Belmont Stakes.

Commandment put the Kentucky Derby behind him with a purposeful four-furlong move at Churchill Downs in 48.80 seconds, a sharp enough follow-up to keep Wathnan Racing’s Florida Derby winner firmly pointed toward Saratoga’s Belmont Stakes on June 6.
The workout, his first breeze since the Derby, came in company and left trainer Brad Cox and racing manager Case Clay encouraged by what they saw afterward. Clay said the colt went in :48 2/5, went on to 1:01 1/5, and galloped out in 1:15, a finish that matched what his camp wanted after a difficult but not discouraging run in Louisville.
That Derby remains the key to the rebound story. Commandment was seventh after being slow away, sitting 13th through a half-mile in :46.44, then launching a middle move while wide before running into traffic. He still finished only 5 1/4 lengths behind upset winner Golden Tempo, and that margin, combined with the trouble he endured, is why his connections believe there is still a major stakes performance ahead.
Cox had already left the door open for the Belmont after the Derby, and the Churchill move made that path clearer. NYRA’s current Belmont contenders page lists Commandment among the potential runners, with Luis Saez slated to ride for the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. The race will be run at 1 1/4 miles on June 6, not the traditional 1 1/2 miles, and it is the third and final Belmont staged at Saratoga before the event returns to Belmont Park in 2027.

Commandment’s profile still reads like that of a horse with unfinished business. He won the Florida Derby on March 29 after taking the Fountain of Youth Stakes, giving him two straight Grade 1 prep wins and a 4-for-5 career record. He also gave Cox back-to-back Florida Derby victories after Tappan Street last year. Further Ado, Cox’s other Derby starter, finished 13th, which leaves Commandment as the barn’s more obvious Belmont candidate.
There is also a Saratoga thread woven into his pedigree and price tag. Case Clay Thoroughbred Management bought him for Wathnan Racing for $500,000 at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, and his dam, Sippican Harbor, won the 2018 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga. After the Derby setback, that combination of class, conditioning and Saratoga ties makes Commandment look like a horse ready for a cleaner, more favorable chapter.
