Cornucopian Dominates San Carlos Stakes for First Career Graded Victory
Cornucopian posted 1:20.71 at Santa Anita, the fastest San Carlos in 14 years, as the $1.1M Bob Baffert colt claimed his first career stakes title at 1-5 odds.
A $1.1 million yearling investment paid off at Santa Anita Park on Sunday when Cornucopian swept through the Grade 3 San Carlos Stakes in 1:20.71, the fastest running of the seven-furlong race since The Factor's 1:20.56 in 2012 and just a tick shy of Flying Paster's 1981 stakes record.
Trained by Bob Baffert, the 4-year-old Into Mischief colt was sent off at 1-5 in a six-horse field and delivered exactly what those odds demanded: a 2 3/4-length dismissal of Listenupchance, who finished 4 1/2 lengths clear of third-place Bartholdy. Grade 1 winner Subsanador, returning from a layoff, checked in fourth.
Jockey Juan J. Hernandez kept Cornucopian positioned three-wide while tracking the pace before unleashing the colt in upper stretch. The fractions told the story of a horse running well within himself until the moment he wasn't: 22.16 to the first quarter, 44.03 at the half, and 1:07.93 for six furlongs before he drew clear to the wire. Hernandez said afterward that Cornucopian "settled really well" and responded immediately when asked to pick it up.
For Baffert, the win extended a personal streak at this fixture. He captured the San Carlos for the second consecutive year, and he sounded bullish on what comes next. The trainer said the race "tightened him up" and suggested connections may now aim higher, with the colt looking sharp and full of energy on the Arcadia dirt.
The victory marks Cornucopian's first career stakes win, though the underlying ability was never in question. He posted a 101 Beyer in a debut-season sprint, flashing elite raw speed before a nine-month layoff raised questions about his 2026 trajectory. A strong allowance return earlier this year answered those questions; the San Carlos confirmed the answer.
Owned by SF Racing, Starlight Racing and Madaket Stables, Cornucopian now enters the spring prep calendar with legitimate credentials and tactical range. His ability to track three-wide before producing a decisive stretch move suggests he is not limited to pace-dependent scenarios, which opens both high-end sprint targets and route tests as viable options. At 1-5, the market expected a statement. Cornucopian delivered one that echoes through the record books.
