Bob Baffert's Cornucopian draws the spotlight in Sunday's G3, $100,000 San Carlos Stakes at Santa Anita, a seven-furlong test that doubles as a reunion for two Grade 1 winners who haven't seen a racetrack in months.

The 4-year-old colt by Into Mischief trained by Bob Baffert will break from post 6 under Juan Hernandez carrying 120 pounds. Cornucopian most recently overcame trouble to roll to a powerful three-length win in a first-level allowance going 6½ furlongs at Santa Anita, earning a 97 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort. That allowance score has set the table for a stakes test, and the San Carlos, Race 6 of a nine-race card with an approximate post time of 3:30 p.m. PT, is where Baffert sends him next.

The more intriguing story in the field may belong to Subsanador. The 7-year-old South American import by Fortify, trained by Richard Mandella for owner Wathnan Racing, will be making his first start in nearly 18 months. He was last seen taking the G1 California Crown going 1 1/8 miles in September 2024 at Santa Anita, a victory that stamped him as one of the best older horses on the West Coast. Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, who piloted Subsanador to that California Crown win, picks up the mount again from post 4 at 124 pounds. The drop from a mile and an eighth to seven furlongs is a notable shift in context, but Mandella has steered enough layoff horses back to form that the adjustment in distance is the least of the questions here. The bigger one is simply whether 18 months off can be overcome first time back, regardless of trainer.

Stronghold grabbed an impressive victory in the Santa Anita Derby in 2024 and now draws post 2 under Antonio Fresu at 124 pounds. Fresu is a native of Italy who established himself as a top-level rider on the West Coast, and the Santa Anita Derby was his first Grade 1 win. Like Subsanador, Stronghold arrives off a layoff, giving the race two returning Grade 1 winners whose fitness is the central handicapping question.

The remaining runners fill out a compact but live seven-horse field. Getaway Car (Florent Geroux, 124) matches Subsanador and Stronghold on weight from post 5. Bartholdy breaks from the rail under Tyler Baze at 120, Listenupchance works from post 3 with Emisael Jaramillo at 120, and Judge Miller closes out the field from post 7 under Kazushi Kimura at 120. First post Sunday at Santa Anita is 1:00 p.m. PT.

Seven furlongs is a distance that rewards tactical speed, and with three horses at 124 pounds and four at 120, the pace is genuinely open. Cornucopian has shown he can win with or without a clean trip. Subsanador's last recorded effort was a Grade 1 performance at a longer distance on the same track. The San Carlos won't answer every question about any of them, but it will answer the most important one about two: whether a long winter away has cost Subsanador and Stronghold anything they can't get back.
