Corrina Corrina Wins Russell and Helen Foutz Distaff Stakes at Sunray Park
Corrina Corrina erased a seven-length deficit and powered home in 1:17.78, a stakes win that reaffirmed her as New Mexico’s standard-bearer.

Corrina Corrina did not just survive another stakes test at SunRay Park. She turned a fast, contested 6 1/2-furlong sprint into another reminder that New Mexico’s most accomplished state-bred mare still sets the standard, coming from far back to win the Russell and Helen Foutz Distaff Stakes on April 12 and push her career bankroll beyond $1.6 million.
The 7-year-old New Mexico-bred mare by Mr. Trieste out of Scared Money was last early, trailing by seven lengths down the backstretch while Mo Money Time and Julia’s Promise carved out a brisk half mile in 45.88 seconds. Corrina Corrina moved outside, joined the race at the head of the stretch and settled matters late, stopping the clock in 1:17.78 on a fast dirt track. The official chart listed her as a 3/4-length winner over First Again, while the local recap said she had gone on by 1 1/2 lengths.
That shape matters as much as the result. Corrina Corrina did not simply outclass a soft field; she had to track down older fillies and mares in a nine-horse lineup that looked well-matched on paper, then finish the job after a demanding pace setup. Sent off at 4-to-5, she returned $3.60 to win, and the $2 exacta with First Again paid $9.80. For horseplayers, the signal is clear: even when the race does not unfold her way, Corrina Corrina still finds a way to get there.
The win also sharpened the bigger picture. It was her first victory from four starts in 2026, coming off a second-place finish behind Marking Canyon in the New Mexico State University Stakes at Sunland Park. It was her 18th lifetime stakes win, her third SunRay Park victory, and her 23rd triumph from 46 starts. The New Mexico Horse Breeders Association said the mare is now the all-time leader among state-bred thoroughbreds in both wins and earnings, a résumé that gives every regional stakes appearance added weight.
Just as important, the race offered a useful comparison point for where she stands against this circuit’s standard. First Again won the 2025 Foutz Distaff in 1:17.30, and the 2024 renewal was taken in 1:18.78. BloodHorse lists the SunRay Park 6 1/2-furlong track record at 1:15.30, which shows Corrina Corrina was well within stakes-winning range but not brushing record territory. That is what makes her form line so interesting now: this looked less like a one-off burst and more like a mare still capable of carrying local class into the next regional target.
