Dark Saffron Defends Dubai Golden Shaheen Title, Edges Bentornato in Sprint

Dark Saffron did it again, and once again nobody saw it coming. The 4-year-old son of Flameaway repeated as Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen champion at Meydan Racecourse on Saturday, defeating Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Bentornato by 1¾ lengths to collect the $2 million first prize and push his lifetime earnings past $2.5 million. Racing for trainer Ahmad Bin Harmash and owner Sultan Ali, Dark Saffron has now won the 1,200-meter dirt sprint in back-to-back years, and both victories have come as an upset.

Connor Beasley rated Dark Saffron off the leaders through the early stages, then angled him into clear running room entering the stretch. The colt responded with a sharp, sustained burst that put the race away before Bentornato could mount a serious challenge. Bentornato, sent off as the favorite in his first start since capturing the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) on Nov. 1 at Del Mar, tracked from third or fourth on the inside under Jose Ortiz before swinging wide into the clear for the stretch run. He ran on stoutly but could not reel in the defending champion. Cats By Five finished a creditable third.

The winning time was reported at 1:10.68 to 1:10.7, depending on the timing service. Dark Saffron returned $48.80 in United States pari-mutuel pools, a payout that confirms the longshot framing even with a title defense on his resume. BloodHorse noted that both of Dark Saffron's Golden Shaheen victories qualify as upsets, a distinction that says as much about handicapper skepticism as it does about the horse's ability to deliver on the biggest dirt sprint stage in the world.

Dark Saffron is a Kentucky-bred son of Flameaway, bred by Brookdale Farm. His dam, Meadow Saffron, is a stakes-winning daughter of Military and has produced six winners from seven starters. The two Golden Shaheen titles represent the only stakes wins of Dark Saffron's career, making his $2.5 million earnings figure all the more striking given how narrowly concentrated his peak form has been.

Harmash and Sultan Ali expressed satisfaction following the race, highlighting Dark Saffron's adaptability and improvement across the carnival season. Connections indicated they would evaluate Breeders' Cup plans, travel windows and a rest timeline in the weeks ahead. The repeat win reinforced Dark Saffron's standing as one of the world's most consistent dirt sprinters when at his best, and a second Golden Shaheen title will carry real weight in autumn championship handicapping.

Beasley and Harmash turned the full Dubai World Cup card into a personal sprint showcase. The pair also combined to win the Al Quoz Sprint (G1T) on the turf with Native Approach, sweeping both sprint graded stakes on the card. That double result underlined a broader shift in the global sprint calendar: elite horses increasingly treat Dubai Carnival night not as a prep but as a primary target, and Dark Saffron just won it twice.
