Dedicated Hero did more than win a Grade 2 at Ayr. He gave Sandy Thomson the marquee hurdle prize that had always sat just out of reach, and he did it in a way that said plenty about both horse and trainer.

The seven-year-old powered through the heavy, soft-in-places ground to win the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle by five lengths on Saturday, taking the 2m limited handicap in 4m 2.53s. Captain Hugo chased him home in second, with Ooh Betty third in the eight-runner field. Tutti Quanti’s fall two out helped turn the finish into a test of nerve, but Dedicated Hero was already travelling like the class horse once Danny McMenamin asked for more.

It was a first Scottish Champion Hurdle for Thomson, whose name has long been linked more closely with chasers than top-end hurdle performers. That is what makes this result matter beyond one race. Thomson has been second, third and fourth in the Scottish National before, but never quite landed a prize of this weight at Ayr’s premier jumping meeting. Now he has, and it broadens the way the yard is seen. This was not just a useful winner on the right day. It was a trainer stretching his profile into a different lane.

Dedicated Hero’s route to this moment was anything but tidy. He had a hampered run and unseat at Musselburgh, then a wind operation, then a strong run at Kelso, where he won a 2m5f handicap hurdle on April 2 before heading back to Ayr. Thomson said the wind surgery made a major difference and admitted he probably should have had it done earlier. He also said the horse was “really good back at Kelso last time and outstanding today.” After a season that had already delivered frustration, the switch back to hurdles proved the right call.

The winner was 6 lb out of the handicap and carried 106, yet still put the race to bed decisively. That kind of margin matters in a race worth £100,000, with a winner’s share reported at about £56,318.58, because it marks the performance as more than a survival job in the mud. It was a proper statement.

Gibbs Island and Tellherthename were withdrawn because of unsuitable ground, a reminder of how testing Ayr was for the Scottish Grand National Festival card. But Dedicated Hero handled it, and in doing so gave Thomson a breakthrough that changes the shape of his record as much as the result sheet.
