Commandment's narrow neck victory over Chief Wallabee in the Feb. 28 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park triggered the most dramatic reshuffling in the Daily Racing Form's updated Kentucky Derby Top 20 contenders list, with both horses crashing the top of the leaderboard and two of their beaten rivals falling off it entirely.

Commandment, trained by Brad Cox, wore down and withstood a determined challenge from Chief Wallabee to win the Fountain of Youth by a neck. The win was remarkable for its context: Chief Wallabee made a sweeping four-wide move around the far turn to reach even terms into the stretch and dueled all the way to the wire, losing by a neck in what was just his second career start and first route race.

The DRF rankings, assigned by handicapper David Aragona with horses sharing identical odds listed at the same position, reflected the seismic shift. Commandment moved from 20-1 all the way to 8-1, landing at T2 alongside Chief Wallabee, who vaulted even further from 35-1 to that same 8-1 price. Commandment not only proved he could go two turns in the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park, the Into Mischief colt indicated he had more stamina if needed. His top Beyer of 101 edges the 100 posted by Chief Wallabee, giving Brad Cox's barn a narrow edge in the numbers.

Cox said the Florida Derby (G1) March 28 is the "logical spot," while noting the April 4 Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland as another option depending on how Commandment comes out of the race. Bill Mott's Chief Wallabee, trained by the Hall of Famer who conditioned 2025 Derby and Horse of the Year winner Sovereignty, is also pointing to the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on March 28. Mott called it an eye-opening effort for Chief Wallabee in defeat, saying, "To run against horses that have much more experience, I think he showed up," adding that connections have "four or five races to choose from" as they map out the next step.

Paladin remains the 6-1 favorite atop the DRF list, with Todd Pletcher's Nearly holding steady at T4 (12-1). Nearly, whose top Beyer of 98 came with a 5 3/4-length demolition of the Holy Bull S. (G3) on Jan. 31, is also entered in the Florida Derby.

The Fountain of Youth also produced two new entrants to the Top 20. Iron Honor, trained by Chad Brown, crashed the list at T8 (25-1) after winning the Gotham S. (G3) on Feb. 28 by one length; he is scheduled for the Wood Memorial (G2) on April 5 at Aqueduct and carries a top Beyer of 95. Class President also joined the Top 20 following weekend victories.

The losers from last weekend's preps paid a steep price in the rankings. Napoleon Solo and Bravaro both dropped off the Top 20 entirely after distant Fountain of Youth finishes. Bravaro disappointed with a fourth-place finish, finishing 8 3/4 lengths behind Solitude Dude. Litmus Test fell to 40-1 after fading to third in the Rebel Stakes, and Blackout Time slid to 50-1 following a fourth-place finish.

Also still present in the DRF Top 20: Bob Baffert's Brant at T10 (30-1), whose last graded effort was a third-place finish in the BC Juvenile (G1) on Oct. 31, and Chad Brown's Canaletto at T10 (30-1), who romped by eight lengths in a maiden on Jan. 25 and is targeting the Tampa Bay Derby (G3).

Saturday's $1 million Florida Derby (G1) shapes up as a showdown among top colts who have delivered top-caliber performances in the preceding preps at Gulfstream, with Commandment and Chief Wallabee separated by just a neck in the Fountain of Youth and Nearly waiting in the wings since his demolition job in the Holy Bull. Whatever happens March 28 will almost certainly scramble the DRF Top 20 all over again.
