The trouble line told the story, and El Magnate answered it with a finish good enough to make the mess look meaningful. The 3-year-old Into Mischief colt hopped at the break, spotted the field several lengths, then clipped heels and stumbled hard on the turn before regrouping and running on to win his Woodbine maiden under Rafael Hernandez.

Sent off as the 8-5 favorite, El Magnate had every reason to fold after the stumble, especially after an opening quarter in :22.89 left him still far behind the leaders early. Instead, he found his rhythm, angled into clear running and closed strongly through the lane to complete a debut that was far more impressive than the final margin suggested. For a horse that was compromised almost immediately, the ability to recover and finish full of run is what turned a maiden win into a statement.

The performance earned El Magnate TDN Rising Star honors, the designation reserved for young horses that show the kind of early ability associated with future graded-stakes types. It also made him Into Mischief’s 60th Rising Star, another marker for a sire whose offspring continue to show up with elite upside before they have much on the page. El Magnate is out of Cover Song, by Fastnet Rock, and was bred in Kentucky by B. Flay Thoroughbreds for M Racing Group LLC.

The colt’s paper trail had already suggested talent before his first start. He sold for $500,000 as a weanling and RNA’d for $725,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale, a reminder that the market had long seen the profile. After the win, his record stood at 1 start, 1 win and earnings of $32,419, but the more important figure was the way he earned it, by absorbing a bad trip and still finishing like a horse with more ahead of him.

Hernandez added another layer of polish to the ride. He entered the season as Woodbine’s 2025 leading rider with 148 wins, while Mark Casse and Bruno Schickedanz arrived at the track as the 2025 leading trainer and leading owner, respectively. Against that backdrop, El Magnate did not merely survive a rough introduction. He announced himself as a colt worth following when the races get tougher.
