Bob Baffert's Explora never made it to the starting gate for Friday's $1 million GII Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park. The Blame filly, entered as the even-money morning-line favorite for the 1 1/16-mile dirt race, was scratched after spiking a fever during the trip from Southern California to Arkansas.

"She spiked a temperature from the trip and we had to treat her with antibiotics," Baffert said. "She'll go straight to the Kentucky Oaks."

That means the May 1 GI Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs is now the target for the Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman-owned filly, who arrives at that decision as one of the stronger points leaders in the division. Explora sits third on the Kentucky Oaks leaderboard with 95 points, well clear of any bubble concerns: last year, Quickick was the final filly to make the starting gate with just 34 points, though Churchill Downs uses qualifying points as a preference system only when the field exceeds 14 runners.

Her scratch does reshape the points picture for the fillies who do run Friday. With Explora out, the Fantasy goes to the gate with five horses instead of six, triggering a Churchill Downs rule implemented in 2025 that reduces qualifying points for small-field races. Instead of the standard 100-50-25-15-10 distribution, Friday's Fantasy will pay out at 75-37.5-18.75-11.25-7.5. A further scratch to four runners would cut available points to 50 percent.

The five remaining starters present a clear opportunity for Sticker Shock (3/1, Irad Ortiz Jr., Brad Cox) and Counting Stars (5/2, Francisco Arrieta, Mark Casse) to vault up the Oaks leaderboard. Mark Casse also saddles Search Party (6/1, Cristian Torres) and Empath (20/1, Ramon Vazquez), while Kenneth McPeek sends out Taken by the Wind (15/1, Emmanuel Esquivel).

As for Explora, the credentials that made her the favorite are not in question. Never worse than second across seven career starts, she opened her sophomore campaign by winning the seven-furlong Santa Ynez at Santa Anita by 5 1/4 lengths in January, then finished second to Meaning in the GII Las Virgenes on Feb. 8. She shipped to Oaklawn and won the GIII Honeybee on March 1. As a juvenile, she was named a TDN Rising Star after a victory at Del Mar, took the GII Oak Leaf at Santa Anita, and ran second in both the GI Del Mar Debutante and the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies behind Super Corredora on Oct. 31.

With 95 points already banked and six weeks separating her from Churchill Downs, Explora's path to the Kentucky Oaks starting gate remains intact. The question now is whether the antibiotics clear her fast enough to give Baffert adequate preparation time for one of the marquee days in the sport.
