Fasig-Tipton adds 26 supplemental entries to Midlantic May sale

The new group, hips 594 through 619, does more than pad the book. It adds juveniles by Army Mule, Bolt d’Oro, Constitution, Corniche, Curlin, Girvin, Golden Pal, Highly Motivated, Justify, Liam’s Map, Mandaloun, Maxfield, Mitole, Nashville, Not This Time, Olympiad, Pinehurst, Practical Joke, Tapit, Vekoma and Yaupon, a cross-section that gives Timonium a sharper edge at the top and in the middle. When a catalog grows from 593 to 619 entries, the action changes. Pinhookers have more inventory to separate, breeders get more pedigree options to compare, and buyers can be more selective without walking away from the main event.

That matters even more because the under-tack show, set for May 12-14 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds, will not look like the usual stopwatch-driven showcase. Fasig-Tipton’s new format will leave all breezes untimed, with no official clocking published. Riders may carry crops for safety, but they may not strike horses during workouts. The company says the setup is meant to better reflect natural athleticism and attract a wider pool of buyers, which turns the sale into a real test of market confidence rather than a simple speed contest.

The commercial stakes are easy to see. Last year’s Midlantic May sale set Fasig-Tipton records for gross, average and median, topped by a $1.1 million filly in a session that produced four seven-figure juveniles. The catalogue also has recent proof points buyers know by name: Straight No Chaser, the reigning Eclipse Champion Male Sprinter who had earned more than $2.6 million, and Explora, who sold for $350,000 before becoming a multiple graded stakes-placed millionaire. Those are the kind of graduates that keep serious money flowing back into Timonium.
