Forged Steel dominates Hollywood Gold Cup by 9 1/2 lengths

Forged Steel did not just win the Hollywood Gold Cup. He blew it open, pulling away by 9 1/2 lengths over Malarchuk at Santa Anita Park and turning a five-horse Grade 2 into a loud statement about his future.

The 4-year-old Vekoma colt, ridden by Flavien Prat, controlled the 1 1/4-mile dirt race from the rail and never gave the others a chance to close the gap. Prat had only made the trip after a delayed JFK-to-LAX flight, but once he arrived, the assignment was simple: secure the lead, settle the tempo and let Forged Steel do the rest. He did exactly that, carving out relaxed fractions of :23.22 and :46.73 before finishing in 2:01.58.

The result mattered because this was not a soft spot or an empty field. Malarchuk was the favorite at 8-5, with Subsanador, British Isles and Mc Vay all in the mix, and none of them could land a serious blow. Malarchuk tracked early, Mc Vay and Subsanador stayed within range, and British Isles never threatened, but Forged Steel kept finding more with every stride. Equibase lists the victory as the largest winning margin in Hollywood Gold Cup history since 1976.

For trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., the win extended a remarkable run in one of Santa Anita’s signature events. He had already captured the Gold Cup with Skippylongstocking in 2025, and now he did it again with a different horse shipping from the East. That kind of repeat success is no small thing in a race that has long served as a measuring stick for older dirt horses on the West Coast.

The performance also changed the conversation around Forged Steel himself. Before Memorial Day, he had built his resume through placing efforts in races such as the Cutler Bay Stakes, English Channel Stakes, Carry Back Stakes and Temperence Hill Stakes. After this, he no longer looks like a useful graded-stakes runner on the fringe. He looks like a horse with the speed and efficiency to control major dirt routes when left alone, which makes Grade 1 possibilities suddenly feel realistic.

Santa Anita made Gold Cup Day the centerpiece of its spring season, pairing the race with the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile and Grade 1 Gamely Stakes. Forged Steel’s runaway gave the afternoon its defining image, and it also gave Vekoma another top-level name to build on as his offspring continue to rise through important races.
