Further Ado reclaims Derby Dozen top spot after stunning Blue Grass win
Further Ado’s 11-length Blue Grass rout pushed him back to No. 1, but the Derby trail still feels wide open behind him.

Further Ado did more than win the Blue Grass Stakes. He blew the Derby conversation open again.
BloodHorse moved the Brad Cox colt back to the top of its Derby Dozen after his April 4, 11-length demolition in the $1.25 million Grade 1 at Keeneland, a result that wiped away much of the doubt left by his runner-up finish in the March 7 Tampa Bay Derby. He had been No. 1 earlier in the winter, then dropped all the way to eighth. That kind of swing is exactly why the Derby picture still feels unsettled even after the final major prep weekend.
The Blue Grass answered one question and raised several more. Further Ado, the 4-5 favorite with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard, settled into the race and made his move late on the second turn before drawing away from six rivals. The margin was huge, but the manner of the victory is what sharpened the debate: he looked powerful at Keeneland, where he also broke his maiden by 20 lengths in October 2025, and now owns a 2-for-2 record there with an average winning margin of 15 1/2 lengths. That kind of local domination is eye-catching, but it also invites skepticism about whether his best work is tied to a surface and setup he clearly loves.
For Derby bettors, that matters. The Blue Grass gave Further Ado 100 qualifying points, which all but locked up his place in the starting gate for the 152nd Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 2, 2026. The Road to the Kentucky Derby awards points to the top five finishers in each prep race, and the top 17 point-earners make the field for Churchill Downs, where the race remains capped at 20 starters. Further Ado is in. The tougher question is how to price him against horses whose final prep figures may be less flashy but potentially more transferable to Louisville.
Horse Racing Nation framed the Blue Grass as a Derby statement, and it was. It also reinforced Brad Cox’s position on the trail, with Commandment and Fulleffort joining Further Ado among his qualifiers. Even so, the final prep weekend did not produce a settled favorite landscape. Further Ado’s return to the top is proof that one runaway performance can still reset the board, but it has not eliminated the uncertainty that makes this Derby cycle so difficult to handicap.
