Gotham Stakes field of nine set for one-mile Aqueduct Derby qualifier
Chad Brown’s Nyquist colt Iron Honor stretches out from a six-furlong debut to the one-mile Gotham at Aqueduct - can the $475,000 yearling translate a 95 Beyer/99 Brisnet number into Derby points?

Chad Brown’s Iron Honor arrives at Aqueduct facing the central question of the 2026 Gotham Stakes - can a $475,000 Nyquist colt who won a six-furlong debut at Aqueduct translate raw speed into a one-mile, Road to the Kentucky Derby points payday on Feb. 28? The Grade 3 Gotham goes one turn at a mile for a $300,000 purse and awards 50-25-15-10-5 qualifying points to the top five finishers.
Iron Honor, owned by St. Elias Stable, William Lawrence and Cathi Glassman, registered a Dec. 13 graduation at Aqueduct, stalking and pouncing to win by 1 1/4 lengths after an opening quarter in 22.79 seconds. Brisnet credited that effort with a 99 speed rating, while Daily Racing Form and Nyra list a 95 Beyer for the same race. Bred in Kentucky by Mike and Pat Freeny out of Orencia (by Blame), the colt was a $475,000 purchase at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Manny Franco returns aboard with blinkers on after Iron Honor has posted five Payson Park works, including a half-mile in 49.20 seconds in company with Playing Tricks. Trainer Chad Brown said, "I’m excited to get this horse stretched out. He's bred to run longer. His debut number was one of the fastest in the country for two-year-old colts. I think letting the horse get over that fast number first time out and come together for this will be beneficial for him. He's a good horse. I would expect him to move forward here."
Balboa figures as the pace-and-class ingredient from post 1. Trained by Brittany Russell with Sheldon Russell in the saddle, Balboa was third in the Grade 2 Remsen behind Paladin and Renegade and finished second in the Jerome S. on Jan. 3. Secretariat described Balboa as "hard-knocking" with a pedigree "loaded with stamina top and bottom," making the rail draw significant for a horse with recent graded stakes form.
Right to Party is the other line mover on paper. Trainer Kenny McPeek will send out the one-turn mile winner, to be ridden by Reylu Guttierez from post 5, a rival Iron Honor beat in that Dec. 13 maiden. TheFreePPS ranks Right to Party with an OPI Pedigree Index of 8.8, a Recent Speed Figure of 88 and a Final OPI Score of 91.2, and highlights the colt as "distance proven."

The supporting cast includes Hammond (post 2 Jaime Rodriguez) for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., an owner group listed as C2 Racing Stable, JRM Stables, Mathis Stables and Ken Reimer, who won a stakes at Gulfstream in November before finishing a distant third in the Swale. Crown the Buckeye (post 3 Ricardo Santana Jr.) is an Ohio-bred coming off a fading eighth in the Lecomte. Dirty Rich (post 9 Ramon Vazquez) brings an Oaklawn Advent S. win but is labeled "hot-and-cold" with stamina questions. Creole Chrome (post 8 Cristian Torres), Exhibition Only (post 7 Ruben Silvera) and Fourth and One (post 4 Jose Lezcano) round out the nine-horse field; TheFreePPS reproduces a full OPI table placing Iron Honor atop with a Final OPI Score of 97.0 and Creole Chrome third at 90.1.
Pace and surface are pivotal: Brisnet noted that the presence of Balboa, Crown the Buckeye and Dirty Rich projects a strong early pace that could favor stalkers-turned-closers like Iron Honor or Hammond. TheFreePPS also flagged a forecast for light snow and a potentially heavy track at Aqueduct on Feb. 28, arguing stamina and local affinity should be prominent handicapping filters. TheFreePPS summed its betting view bluntly: "The value in the 2026 Gotham lies in the strength of #6 Iron Honor and the specific track-affinity of #5 Right to Party. These two should be the focus of any multi-race wagers or exactas, while the remaining field represents a significant drop-off in authoritative form."
The nine starters and riders, as drawn Sunday by Attheraces, are: 1 Balboa - Sheldon Russell; 2 Hammond - Jaime Rodriguez; 3 Crown the Buckeye - Ricardo Santana Jr.; 4 Fourth and One - Jose Lezcano; 5 Right to Party - Reylu Guttierez; 6 Iron Honor - Manny Franco; 7 Exhibition Only - Ruben Silvera; 8 Creole Chrome - Cristian Torres; 9 Dirty Rich - Ramon Vazquez. With 50 points to the winner, the Gotham not only closes a 10-race Aqueduct card with three other stakes on it, it could reshape the early Kentucky Derby picture if Brown’s stretching plan for Iron Honor proves sound.
