Grade III Palos Verdes Stakes Feb. 15 at Santa Anita for $100,000
Man O Rose makes a graded-stakes jump in the Grade III Palos Verdes, a six-furlong $100,000 sprint that tests California-breds and national contenders alike.

Man O Rose will make his graded-stakes debut in the Grade III Palos Verdes Stakes Feb. 15 at Santa Anita Park, a six-furlong, $100,000 test that reshuffles the West Coast sprint division. The California-bred streaker arrives off four consecutive statebred stakes wins, most recently romping by nine lengths in the Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint on Jan. 17, with a career mark listed in some releases as 18: 11-3-0 for $572,965. Trainer Jeff Mullins brings a horse stepping up from statebred company into open graded company, presenting a classic program story of a homebred seeking to translate local dominance to graded-level credibility.
The overnight conditions are 124 lbs with allowances - non-winners of a graded stakes allowed 2 lbs and non-winners of a sweepstakes allowed 4 lbs - and the published Palos Verdes card applies those allowances. The probable field and assigned weights as printed on the race card are: "Man O Rose, Emisael Jaramillo, 122; Pilot Commander, Florent Geroux, 124; Modus Bestia, Antonio Fresu, 120; Smooth Cruisein, Tiago Pereira, 120; Listenupshance, Tyler Baze, 120; Madaket Road, Kazushi Kimura, 120." The race is listed as Race 8 of 9 with an approximate post time of 4 p.m. PT (first post 12:30 p.m. PT).
Bob Baffert fields multiple high-profile runners in the nominations and the probable runners list, including Madaket Road and Pilot Commander. Madaket Road, a 4-year-old by Quality Road, returns to Santa Anita after finishing fourth in the Grade I Malibu on Dec. 28; Madaket Road led after the opening half mile in that seven-furlong race but "weakened in the stretch to check in fourth." Madaket Road also carried a 2025 résumé that includes being runner-up in three graded stakes, including the Grade I Woody Stephens at Saratoga. Kazushi Kimura will ride Madaket Road for the first time, with the colt listed at 120 lbs on the card.
Pilot Commander, another Baffert trainee, re-emerged from a 9 1/2-month layoff on Jan. 16 and was beaten a neck by Midnight Mammoth in a high-level allowance going seven furlongs; the 5-year-old by Justify previously won the G3 San Carlos. Florent Geroux is set to ride Pilot Commander for the first time at the 124-lb base. Other runners include Modus Bestia (trainer Richard Baltas), Smooth Cruisein (trainer Karen Headley) and Listenupshance (trainer Doug F. O'Neill), all part of a compact six-horse field printed after Equibase closed nominations with 10 entries pending late mail.

Beyond the track implications, the Palos Verdes highlights breeding and program dynamics: a California-bred like Man O Rose using statebred preps to press into graded ranks, major stables such as Baffert's targeting seasonal sprint targets, and the marketplace interest that graded-pace victories bring to stallion prospects and private-sale valuations. Financial mechanics are explicit in the conditions: $100,000 guaranteed purse with $60,000 to the winner, $20,000 to second, $12,000 to third, $6,000 to fourth and $2,000 to fifth, and nomination and starting fees governed by the subscription and supplementary nomination rules.
For racing fans and bettors, the Palos Verdes will be a short, sharp form test: will Man O Rose’s statebred momentum hold up against graded-caliber speed and multiple fresheners from top barns, or will Madaket Road and Pilot Commander reaffirm Baffert’s sprint stock? Post positions, official overnight confirmations and any late changes in the entry box will settle the picture; the Palos Verdes should clarify Spring targets and reshape the early-season sprint pecking order.
