Grammy Girl powers to Vagrancy win, extends stakes streak to three

Grammy Girl did not just win the Grade 3 Vagrancy, she made it look like a mare building a real résumé. The 5-year-old rolled past stablemate Mystic Lake by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:16.64 for 6 1/2 furlongs over a fast dirt track at Belmont at the Big A, extending her all-stakes winning streak to three and giving Saffie A. Joseph, Jr. another sharp sprint result to celebrate.

The price was reasonable, too. Grammy Girl returned $9.48 to win, and the exacta with Mystic Lake paid $17.36. For a mare owned by Red Storm Stable, Miller Racing LLC and Flower Power Stables, the Vagrancy was not a flashy upset so much as a professional confirmation that she belongs among the better female sprinters in the East.

That was already the shape of her season. Grammy Girl entered with a perfect 2026 record, two starts and two wins, after taking the Willa On the Move at Laurel Park and the Grade 3 Distaff at Aqueduct Racetrack on April 4. Her overall line now stands at 20 starts, 7 wins, 3 seconds and 4 thirds, with $464,800 in earnings. She is by Mastery out of Song Girl by Songandaprayer, bred by Steven Nicholson and Brandi Nicholson.

The Vagrancy unfolded the right way for a horse with her kind of finish. My Magic Wand went straight to the front and carved out the early tempo, Mystic Lake sat close in a stalking spot, and With the Angels saved ground. Grammy Girl, ridden by Javier Castellano, was placed where she needed to be, then Castellano waited until the final eighth before asking for the move. When he did, she finished with enough authority to settle the race inside the last furlong.

That matters because this was not a one-off for Joseph in this race. His barn produced back-to-back Vagrancy exactas, with Haulin Ice over R Disaster in 2025 and Grammy Girl over Mystic Lake this time. It is the kind of pattern that says more than one good week: Joseph keeps showing up with the right horses in the right spring sprint spots.

Grammy Girl still has a step to take before she becomes a national division headliner, but the path is clear. Stakes winners earn respect; graded sprint mares who keep winning like this start forcing deeper questions about who really owns the division. Another step up against top-class female sprinters in a higher-grade sprint would tell the rest of the country whether this streak is simply hot form or the start of something bigger.
