Grand Slam Smile will go into Santa Anita Park’s Royal Heroine Stakes as the horse to beat, but Race 9 on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. PT is set up as far more than a one-filly showcase. The Grade III, $100,000 mile on turf for fillies and mares 4 and up has nine runners, and the morning-line favorite will have to prove that her recent surge is as real as her record says it is.

The 5-year-old Smiling Tiger mare carries 122 pounds and will have William Antongeorgi III in the irons. Her last two starts explain why she stands out: a 2 1/4-length win in the Irish O'Brien Stakes on March 21, run in 1:13.66 over about 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf, followed by a third-place finish in the Buena Vista Stakes at a mile on Feb. 28. Equibase lists her career line at 19 starts, 11 wins, six seconds and two thirds, with $912,120 in earnings, and she has gone 3-for-3 in 2026 with two wins and a third through April 20.

For owners Larry and Marianne Williams and trainer Sean McCarthy, the real question is not whether Grand Slam Smile belongs at this level, but whether this is the kind of mile that lets her control the race rather than chase it. The Royal Heroine has often favored a mare with position and timing over pure speed, and that matters here because a compact turf mile can quickly expose any favorite forced to do too much too soon. If the pace is honest, the setup should reward patience and a well-timed move.

The main threats have credentials of their own. Take A Breath, from the Mark Glatt barn, comes in off the Santa Ana Stakes win and cuts back to a mile after showing she can handle the distance in England. May Day Ready brings the strongest class line of the group, making her local debut for Richard Mandella after KatieRich Stables moved her west. Santa Anita lists Antonio Fresu for the ride, and her record stands at 10 starts, four wins, one second and one third, with $1,306,776 in earnings. She was second in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar and later won the Lake Placid Stakes, so she arrives with graded quality that could matter immediately.

Santa Anita’s April 25 stakes program also includes the Lewis Stakes and Thunder Road Stakes, giving the card a deep turf feel. Public Assembly won last year’s Royal Heroine, but this renewal looks tougher, with multiple graded winners and a pace puzzle that should reveal whether Grand Slam Smile is truly dominant or simply the most recognizable name in a strong division.
