Twelve months after watching My Wish lose the Hong Kong Derby in a photo-finish, Mark Newnham finally got his hands on the city's most coveted prize when Invincible Ibis stormed home to win the HK$26-million BMW Hong Kong Derby at Sha Tin, overhauling front-runner Numbers by 1 1/4 lengths in a reported record time.

Hugh Bowman, riding his third Derby winner after Werther in 2016 and Furore in 2019, gave the Hellbent gelding a patient, ground-saving ride from midfield in the 14-runner field before unleashing a sustained run that proved too strong for everything in the straight. Numbers, ridden by Derek Leung, had worked his way to the front from gate 13 and turned the race into a genuine staying test, holding a solid lead into the home turn. Bowman, slotted about six places back, began closing around 600 metres from the finish, steered outside of traffic and had his mount in front somewhere between the 100 and 150-metre marks. Stormy Grove, the Classic Cup winner ridden by Harry Bentley, charged late to grab third, a short head behind Numbers, while the $3.8 favourite Little Paradise faded to finish a well-beaten ninth, failing to see out the 2,000 metres.

The winning time was reported as either 1:59.33 or 1:59.43 depending on the source, with both figures representing a new record for the Derby since the race distance was set at 2,000 metres in 2000, eclipsing Massive Sovereign's mark of 1:59.85 set in 2024.

Invincible Ibis, owned by the Ibis Syndicate, had taken a winding path through the Classic Series. He finished sixth to Little Paradise in the Hong Kong Classic Mile before rallying to run a fast-closing second behind Stormy Grove in the 1,800-metre Hong Kong Classic Cup. That Classic Cup form was comprehensively reversed on Derby day.

Bowman, who is now based in Hong Kong full-time, was characteristically precise about the moment the race turned. "As we started to come round the home turn, I thought 'I'm in business here, I really am,'" he said. "The run was economical, so when I brought him to the outside and let him down, it was no surprise that he went the way that he did and I'm very proud of him." He was equally generous toward trainer and horse in his immediate reaction: "Thank you to Mark and the team for preparing this horse in such magnificent order; he really did peak this afternoon. The distance was a query, no doubt about it, but he came through with flying colours. He gave me the sweetest ride throughout the entire trip."

The victory capped a remarkable week for Newnham, who had saddled five winners at Happy Valley on the preceding Wednesday night. Dan Zigal received the owner's trophy on behalf of the Ibis Syndicate in front of a Derby day crowd that The Standard reported as more than 72,000, including more than 11,000 mainland and overseas tourists, described as a record attendance for the race.

The Derby is the third and final leg of the Hong Kong four-year-old Classic Series, and this year it delivered a finish to match its billing: a front-runner who fought to the line, a Classic Cup winner charging late, and a horse who had looked ordinary in January turning the tables on them both.
