Kentucky Oaks contenders sharpen final workouts ahead of Saturday draw
Bella Ballerina’s 47.40 breeze and Always a Runner’s smooth half-mile headlined Churchill’s last major Oaks look before Saturday’s draw.

Six fillies put the finishing touches on their Kentucky Oaks plans Friday morning at Churchill Downs, and the fastest move belonged to Bella Ballerina, who drilled a half-mile in 47.40 seconds with Tyler Gaffalione aboard. Close behind on the clock, and perhaps just as important in manner, Always a Runner went 48.40 with Jose Ortiz up in company with maiden winner Leinani, a sign that Chad Brown wanted a sharp but controlled edge heading into the 152nd running of the Longines Kentucky Oaks.
Those two timed works changed the conversation most. Brown said the exercise rider and eventual Oaks rider both were impressed by how smooth Always a Runner felt and how well she galloped out, which matters as much as the split when the race is nine furlongs at Churchill Downs. Bella Ballerina’s work carried a similar tone for Brendan Walsh, who said she did everything the team wanted and came out of the drill in great shape. The official note said she galloped out five furlongs in 59.20, a strong follow-through for a filly that had already been handled deliberately in the mornings to encourage relaxation and education.
The rest of the morning painted a more fluid picture behind those two. Michael McCarthy sent out Brooklyn Blonde and Meaning during the main Derby and Oaks training period, while Paradise also got her look at the track. Prom Queen worked later at 9 a.m., another sign of how different barns are managing energy and timing in the final days before the draw. Bob Baffert’s pair, Explora and Bottle of Rouge, simply jogged while the barn kept them on schedule for next Friday, which underscored the split between barns asking for a real move and barns maintaining condition.

That contrast is what Friday’s works revealed about the Oaks pecking order. Bella Ballerina and Always a Runner looked like fillies trying to sharpen into win threats, not just hold form. Prom Queen still belongs in that tier after her 2 3/4-length victory in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks, a race that earned her the 100 qualifying points she needed for Louisville. The others showed up and stayed on schedule, but the difference between a serious move and a maintenance drill was clear.
The next marker comes Saturday, when the post-position draws for both the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby are set for 2 p.m. ET between Races 3 and 4 on the outdoor Paddock Terrace. Churchill Downs lists Oaks Day gates opening at 11 a.m. ET with the first race at 12:30 p.m. ET, and the Oaks itself goes Friday, May 1, with the traditional Lilies for the Fillies garland and the track’s Pink Out breast cancer awareness tradition back in place.
