Legacy Link did more than win the Musidora at York. She took a race that often tells the Epsom story and turned it into a market-moving statement, repelling Felicitas to score by three-quarters of a length and tighten her grip on the Betfred Oaks picture.

The 2026 Tattersalls Musidora Stakes, run over 1 mile 2 furlongs 56 yards on good ground for £130,000, drew only five runners after Della Pace was a non-runner. Legacy Link, the 6/4 favorite under Colin T. Keane for John Gosden, was still a touch green on her first start since finishing fourth in the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket in October, but she settled into the race, tracked the pace and answered every test when the pressure came. Felicitas briefly got her head in front, yet Legacy Link dug in three furlongs out, reclaimed the lead and pulled clear enough to finish ahead of K Sarra, who was another 1 1/2 lengths back in third.

That is the kind of response that matters at this stage of the season. Gosden did not get a polished filly, but he got a filly who kept finding when the race turned serious, and Keane came away convinced she will be better for the run and better again over a mile and a half. Gosden said she was a little green early, got on the wrong lead around the bend and needed her second wind because it was her first run of the season. The key part came at the finish and after it, when the filly stayed on strongly enough to make Epsom look the likelier target.

This was also a significant reset for Juddmonte and the Gosdens. Legacy Link was the stable’s chosen runner over Symbol Of Majesty, and she now looks the stronger Classic hand in the yard’s own pecking order. She is by Dubawi out of Chiasma, a sister to Frankel and Noble Mission, with Kind as the dam of that famous branch of the family, so the Musidora was not just a trial winner from a smart page. It looked like a filly starting to grow into the pedigree.

The market reacted quickly, with Legacy Link’s Oaks price shortening from 8/1 to 5/1, and the race history says that move is no fluke. The Musidora has produced two Oaks winners and two Oaks seconds in the past five years, including Soul Sister for the Gosdens, and John Gosden’s ninth win in the race drew him level with Sir Henry Cecil’s record. Legacy Link now carries entries in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Oaks, the Coronation Stakes and the Irish Oaks, but after York, Epsom looks like the race that fits her best.
