Life of Joy ruled out of Kentucky Oaks, Paradise inherits spot
Life of Joy’s minor setback opens an Oaks lane for Paradise, stripping the field of a filly with 122 points and a 3 3/4-length Fair Grounds Oaks win.

Life of Joy’s exit changed the Kentucky Oaks picture as soon as Churchill Downs posted the update Tuesday, because one of the race’s most secure qualifiers is now out and Paradise is in. The minor setback did not sound severe, but it was enough to knock out a filly who had been shaping as a major factor on the first Friday in May and force a quick reshuffle of the final gate.
For Brad Cox, the decision points to patience. Life of Joy will miss the Kentucky Oaks and be aimed at a fall campaign instead, a sensible move for a 3-year-old filly whose value extends well beyond one spring target. She is by Gun Runner out of Jordan’s Leo, by Malibu Moon, and her résumé already marks her as one of the division’s more accomplished runners. She was purchased for $375,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September Sale, and her form has steadily climbed from a debut maiden win at Horseshoe Indianapolis by 14 3/4 lengths to a victory in the Rags to Riches Stakes at Churchill Downs.
Her biggest jump came on March 21, when she rolled past Bella Ballerina to win the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks by 3 3/4 lengths. That effort gave her 122 Kentucky Oaks points and, for a time, made her look like one of the safest names in the field. BloodHorse’s April standings showed her among the leading qualifiers, with Paradise sitting on 75 points and waiting in the wings.
Now Paradise inherits the spot, a reminder that one late scratch can alter the pecking order all the way down the list. Paradise had already been part of the late-prep conversation, stretching out for the April 4 Gazelle Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack, and her move into the Oaks field gives the final lineup a different look. Life of Joy’s absence removes a proven stakes filly with a strong Churchill Downs record, including that Rags to Riches win and a runner-up finish in the Suncoast Stakes, from a race that had already been tightening by the day.
The Kentucky Oaks is set for Friday, May 1 at Churchill Downs, where the race-day backdrop also includes the 18th Survivors Parade honoring 150 breast- and ovarian-cancer survivors and fighters. The charitable initiative has raised more than $1 million since it began, but the sharper racing story now is the one unfolding at the entry box, where Paradise gets the open door and the rest of the field moves one step closer to the post.
