Lorelei Lee Wires Bourbonette Oaks, Draws Kentucky Oaks Consideration

Lorelei Lee made her two-turn debut look effortless, leading every step of the $300,000 Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park on Saturday and drawing an immediate commitment from trainer Michael J. Maker to pursue the Longines Kentucky Oaks.

"Ownership has already made a management decision, she'll be nominated to the Kentucky Oaks," Maker said after the gate-to-wire score.

Ridden by Fernando De La Cruz, the bay Nyquist filly broke sharply and outdueled Resplendence into the first turn, clocking the opening quarter-mile in :24.07. She maintained control through the half in :49.77 and reached three-quarters in 1:13.89 as the field compressed approaching the far turn. Resist ranged up to challenge on the bend and Lovely Grey launched a sweeping wide rally entering the stretch, but Lorelei Lee refused to yield, digging in and drawing clear to win by 1 3/4 lengths in a final time of 1:44.81.

Lovely Grey held on for second, Resist finished third, and La Ville Lumiere, Bless Her and Resplendence completed the top six. The nine-horse field was rounded out by Scratch It, Beara Peninsula and Wonzee Weather. Lorelei Lee returned $23.98 on a win ticket, suggesting she entered the gate at a generous price despite being trained by Maker and handled by De La Cruz.

The victory was both Lorelei Lee's stakes debut and first start at two turns, a combination that made the performance particularly striking. Maker explained that a weather-disrupted winter had forced the connections to run her at shorter distances earlier in her campaign. "I thought stretching out she'd show some natural speed. We lost some training this winter because of the weather. We ran her short and she was able to handle that and win. We knew she'd get better going long," he said.

Owned by Skychai Racing LLC and bred in Kentucky by Cathy Shircliff's Hot Pink Stables, Lorelei Lee is out of Marilyn Monroan, a Tapit mare, giving her a pedigree that blends speed from her Nyquist sire with the stamina influence of Tapit on the bottom side. Her listed career earnings now stand at $247,502.

The Bourbonette Oaks distributes Kentucky Oaks qualifying points on a 50-25-25-10-5 scale to the top five finishers, meaning Lorelei Lee collected 50 points toward a starting gate spot in the $1.5 million Longines Kentucky Oaks on May 1 at Churchill Downs. A confirmed late nomination filing would formalize what Maker described as an ownership decision already made, setting up the Turfway winner as a new face in a Grade 1 field that takes shape over the next six weeks.
