Lulamba produced a commanding display to win the Grade 2 William Hill Game Spirit Chase at Newbury, extending his unbeaten record over fences to three and reshaping the Arkle Novices’ Chase market. The five-year-old, trained by Nicky Henderson and ridden by Nico de Boinville, drew 6½ lengths clear of Saint Segal with Liberty Hunter in third after clicking into another gear approaching the final fences.

The race settled into a tactical rhythm with Lulamba tracking the leaders through the home turn before taking command in the closing stages. By halfway de Boinville had the 4/11 favourite on the heels of Saint Segal and Master Chewy and, although the gelding needed encouragement turning in, he “clicked into overdrive and put in some of his best leaps,” according to SkySports’ course report. Lulamba took it up with two to jump, jumped the second-last well and quickened away to register the comfortable 6½-length margin that Timeform and SkySports recorded; At The Races’ live commentary estimated the gap at about seven lengths.

The performance was not flawless. Timeform noted that Lulamba was “off the bridle early in the straight, but picked up to dispute the lead three out before taking command after the next,” and highlighted that his jumping still has “a little bit of finesse to come.” Henderson made a similar assessment and stressed the outing’s purpose as education ahead of Cheltenham: “The reason he was here was because he needed the practice as he got none at Exeter and then was great at Sandown... He will go further without a shadow of a doubt and I don't think that is his ground even though I was surprised by how it was. Nico and I walked round this morning and we were perfectly happy to run, but he must be better on good ground and I do think he will jump better on good ground. He's a horse who loves life and despite the ground I think he has really enjoyed himself and I liked the way he quickened up from the second last, the gears work.”

Timeform’s David Cleary added perspective on development and temperament: “Nico said he was the same at Sandown... He has got loads of scope, and we have lots of time for a little practice. It (his jumping) has got a little bit of finesse to come, but that will be there, I hope, come the Tuesday of the Cheltenham Festival in March. I don’t think he would need a racecourse gallop. I would be surprised if he is not bucking and squealing come Tuesday or Wednesday.”

The commercial impact was immediate. Bookmakers cut Lulamba to around 11/8 for the Arkle with Paddy Power and SkySports reporting the move, while Coral made him an even-money favourite in their market. Comparisons with Henderson’s past novices Sprinter Sacre and Altior were drawn by analysts, underlining the trainer’s recent pattern of turning Game Spirit winners into Cheltenham protagonists.

For punters and festival-watchers the takeaways are clear: Lulamba has the raw speed and scope to be a leading Arkle contender, but connections will want to see a little more polish in his jumping and kinder ground to maximise his potential. Next stop is Cheltenham and, with market momentum and pedigree of preparation behind him, Lulamba now heads there as a principal attraction.
