Repole Stable and Spendthrift Farm's Make My Day took control of a Friday afternoon maiden at Gulfstream Park right from the start and proved not for catching, posting a 1 1/2-length victory in the fifth race over a sloppy (sealed) main track to complete the 1 1/16-mile $68,000 maiden special weight in 1:42.57.

Sent off as the 5-2 third betting choice, the 3-year-old bay colt broke a bit inward from the rail draw but nevertheless made an easy lead entering the first turn. Laying down sound fractions of :23.14 and :47.05, Make My Day began to sneak away from his rivals with about three furlongs to race and appeared ready to win by as many as Luis Saez pleased. In the end he needed only to hold off Stompin Grapes, returning $7.00 on a win wager.

The victory improved Make My Day's lifetime record to 2-1-0-1 with earnings of $44,000. His only prior start came Feb. 7 at Tampa, where he finished a distant third to Emerging Market (Candy Ride), a TDN Rising Star and GII Louisiana Derby hopeful who had underscored the quality of that debut field. Carrying the Repole colors at Gulfstream, the colt made clear he had learned from that experience.

Trained by Todd A. Pletcher and bred in Kentucky by Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds LLC, Make My Day was purchased for $1.1 million at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. His dam, Magical Feeling (by Empire Maker), is herself a graded stakes winner with career earnings of $554,532. The family is deep with talent: Make My Day is a half-brother to Imagination (Into Mischief), a multiple graded stakes winner in both the USA and Saudi Arabia with $2,143,700 in earnings, as well as to graded stakes winner Occult (Into Mischief) at $721,006, stakes winner Magical (Tapit) at $164,550, and maiden stakes winner Exulting (Tapit) at $687,370.

The win adds another data point to a productive spring stretch for Gun Runner progeny at Gulfstream. Earlier this month, Disruptor, a separate Gun Runner colt trained by Pletcher for a partnership that also includes Repole Stable and Spendthrift Farm, blazed to a 9 1/4-length maiden special weight score on March 1 at the same track, earning a TDN Rising Star designation. That colt, a $1.15 million purchase from the 2023 Keeneland September sale, was the 17th Gun Runner offspring to receive that honor, joining Echo Zulu, Sierra Leone, and Locked among others.

For Make My Day, the maiden win at 1 1/16 miles on an off track suggests the kind of versatility that could open several paths forward for Pletcher and his partners as the 3-year-old calendar deepens.
