Mark Zahra Nears Return After Tibia Fracture, Targets Super Saturday
Mark Zahra fractured his tibia in a Jan. 15 jumpout, specialists say no surgery is needed, and he plans to be back by the end of February with Super Saturday at Flemington (March 7) circled.

Mark Zahra, who fractured his tibia in a barrier jumpout on January 15, says he will not require surgery and is aiming to return to the saddle by the end of February, with the Super Saturday meeting at Flemington on March 7 circled as a priority. Zahra gave the upbeat update on February 18 during an appearance on The Verdict podcast and in follow-up interviews.
Medical examinations have cleared Zahra for non-surgical treatment, with specialists advising time, rest and a steady rehabilitation program rather than an operation. The injury was sustained at trials jumpouts on January 15; trainers and medical advisers have cautioned that any premature comeback could jeopardise recovery and create further complications, so Zahra is managing a careful timetable that could still accelerate compared with initial fears.
Zahra outlined his short-term timeline on The Verdict, saying he “planned on returning to the saddle by the end of the month” and that he had a “big circle” around Super Saturday at Flemington on March 7. He also declared his intention to ride Tentyris in the Newmarket Handicap, a booking that would pair him with the colt he rode in all three spring starts and who recently won the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes and the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes.
The premiership picture meanwhile shows Zahra holding a significant lead in the Victorian Metropolitan Jockeys’ Premiership, listed at 36 wins to Craig Williams’ 26, a ten-win advantage that preserves his standing while he rehabs. Those totals underline how much the riding calendar and key Group 1 opportunities matter to Zahra’s return plan and booking discussions for late summer and the major Autumn Carnival meetings.
Watching high-profile wins from the sidelines has been emotionally raw for Zahra. He told listeners he has found the recent weeks “the worst, by far,” noting, “You watch Observer win, and then Tentyris win,” and that after Tentyris’ Black Caviar Lightning Stakes performance he “had to go for a walk around the block.” He added a wry aside about perspective, saying, “I got a trip to the Super Bowl out of it,” and compared his situation with Blake Shinn’s, noting Shinn “is far worse off. I was much more lucky, compared to him.”
Zahra kept the tone pragmatic on February 18: “I feel like I’ve done everything I can, from the very start, for it to heal as quick as possible… I reckon I’m pretty close.” If that timetable holds, Zahra could be back for Flemington’s Super Saturday on March 7 and in contention for Newmarket Handicap rides, while plotting the longer-term aim of returning in time for the major Autumn Carnival meetings through steady rehabilitation.
