She saved ground along the rail, waited through a pressured tempo, and when Juan Hernandez called on her, Meaning left no doubt. The 3-year-old Gun Runner filly swept to the lead in upper stretch and pulled clear by two lengths to win the Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks on April 4, stamping herself as a genuine Kentucky Oaks threat in the process.

Hernandez, making his first ride aboard the Bridlewood Farm and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners homebred, threaded the race precisely. French Blue, handled by Florent Geroux, set a pressured tempo through an opening quarter in 22.88 and a half in 46.55. Brooklyn Blonde, the 10-1 shot, surged into contention on the far turn and briefly grabbed a head advantage at the five-sixteenths pole. Meaning had other ideas. She angled off the rail, took command in the stretch and stopped the clock at 1:43.99 for the 1 1/16 miles on a fast main track, with Brooklyn Blonde holding second and Bank Shot finishing a well-beaten third.

"She was rather game today," Hernandez said after dismounting. "She broke so sharp. I saw the horse on the outside and the one that was on the lead, so I decided to keep her back. When she came back to me, that's when she started traveling beautifully."

Trainer Michael McCarthy will send both Meaning and stablemate Brooklyn Blonde east following the result. "I'm proud of both of these fillies," McCarthy said. "I felt good in the stretch, but I felt a lot better after crossing the line. We'll get them both to Churchill and prepare from there. This sets her up well for Churchill."

The win is the third in four career starts for Meaning, who broke her maiden sprinting at Los Alamitos last September before finishing fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. She returned this winter with a one-mile score in the Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita on February 8, and the Santa Anita Oaks extends her résumé to a route of ground with authority. A $440,000 purchase at the 2024 Keeneland September yearling sale, she now carries 100 qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks, the maximum awarded to the winner under the 100-50-25-15-10 distribution.

The race carried an unwanted footnote when Forced Entry, a Bob Baffert trainee who was among the betting choices, was eased early. Jockey Mike Smith reported the filly was "choppy" leaving the gate and pulled her up to avoid injury, leaving Meaning with one fewer challenger to deal with during the stretch drive.

With Churchill Downs circled on the calendar, Meaning arrives as one of the division's clearest tests: a filly with tactical speed, an improving profile at two turns, and a trainer who clearly believes the Kentucky Oaks is the next logical destination.
