Meaning rallies late to upset Breeders' Cup pair, wins Las Virgenes
Meaning rallied from last to win the Las Virgenes at Santa Anita, upsetting Breeders’ Cup rivals and vaulting into Kentucky Oaks contention with 20 Oaks points.

Meaning produced a late-running upset in the Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita Park, rallying from near-last to run past odds-on favorite Explora and champion Super Corredora and win by 1½ lengths in 1:38.39 on a fast main track. Flavien Prat, riding Meaning for the first time for trainer Michael W. McCarthy, guided the Gun Runner filly through traffic and turned a tactical trip into the race’s defining turn.
The compact field of four featured high-profile juveniles from 2025. Explora, the 4-5 morning-line favorite trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Juan José Hernandez, and Super Corredora, the 2025 champion 2-year-old filly and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner ridden by Hector Berrios, set a demanding pace. Bank Shot, stretching out after a maiden victory Jan. 2, ran into the placings at long odds.
Explora and Super Corredora engaged in a speed duel, posting opening fractions of 22.57 (1/4) and 45.98 (1/2) while Meaning was last of four on the first turn. Meaning swung out into the three-wide path late on the far turn, took a narrow advantage near the quarter pole through three-quarters in 1:10.59, and dueled with Explora into the lane before edging clear in the final sixteenth. Prat reflected on the trip: "The first quarter mile was quite fast and I couldn't keep up with them. When we got to the backside, she came underneath me nicely and I had a chance to get out. I felt like the two fillies in front of me were going to take a little bit of a breather. Since I was doing it so easily, I wanted to keep her involved. She did the job from there." He also added, "I couldn't keep up," about the early split and said, "I'm glad I came" and "I'm grateful for the chance to ride."
Meaning, a 3-year-old filly by Gun Runner out of Figure of Speech and bred by Stonehaven Steadings, was purchased for $440,000 as a yearling at Keeneland. The win, recorded as Meaning’s first black-type victory, improved her record to 3-2-0-0 with earnings of $187,000. The official chart lists the Las Virgenes purse as $98,000 with a $60,000 winner’s share; some outlets rounded the purse to $100,000. Meaning returned $7.80 to win; the $1 exacta paid $6.50 and the $1 trifecta paid $25.00. Horseracingnation listed no show wagering.

Beyond the headline result, the victory has clear business and breeding implications. Meaning’s black-type and Grade-influencing result increases her broodmare value for owners Bridlewood Farm and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and validates the $440,000 investment at the yearling sale. The Las Virgenes also carries Kentucky Oaks points on a 20-10-6-4-2 scale; Meaning picked up 20 points and now sits on 26 total after earning six for a fourth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, putting her squarely on the Oaks trail.
McCarthy capped a red-hot card at Santa Anita, saddling three winners including Yellow Card in the Clockers’ Corner Stakes and Thatsalrightmama in a maiden claimer. McCarthy assessed the Las Virgenes result succinctly: "The way she did it today was pretty impressive, to come back against a Breeders’ Cup winner and another Breeders’ Cup runner and perform like that. It will be interesting to see how they all progress here in the next couple of months." Hector Berrios summed up Super Corredora’s trouble: "The pace was too much. She hadn't run in a while. She got a little tired."
Meaning’s rally alters the early Kentucky Oaks narrative and spotlights McCarthy’s stable form. For owners and breeders, the black-type win and stronger résumé enhance future mating and sales calculus; for racing fans, Meaning’s late kick revives intrigue in the 3-year-old filly division as the Oaks points races intensify in the months ahead.
