Four Grade 1 winners waiting in the wings, and the reigning Breeders' Cup Mile champion drawing post 4: the 38th running of the $650,000 Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland on April 10 is shaping up as one of the sharpest weight-for-age turf tests of the spring.

Godolphin's Notable Speech, a four-time Grade or Group 1 winner trained by Charlie Appleby, heads a field of 12 plus one also-eligible confirmed Friday for the Grade 1 mile on turf at Lexington. William Buick, who guided the son of Dubawi to a 1½-length victory in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Del Mar last November, returns from post 4. The race will mark Notable Speech's first start since that championship effort earned the horse year-end honors as champion turf male.

Appleby doubles up for Godolphin with Aomori City (FR), a Group 2 winner in England, who will break from post 5 under Richard Mullen.

The most direct threat may come from Rhetorical, the Coolmore Turf Mile winner trained by Will Walden for the partnership of Gary Barber, Cheyenne Stable, and Wachtel Stable. Rhetorical finished fourth in the Breeders' Cup Mile as the second choice behind Notable Speech and is also making his 2026 debut at Keeneland. Irad Ortiz Jr. has the mount from post 1, and the horse was sharp in his final preparation, working a half-mile on a fast main track Friday morning in :48.40.

Three more Grade 1 winners add depth to a loaded draw. Donamire Farm's Troubleshooting, a Franklin-Simpson winner, will line up alongside Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, William Strauss, and Michael Caruso's Zulu Kingdom, who captured the American Turf. Rounding out the top-level contingent is Deterministic, a dual Grade 1 scorer for St. Elias Stable, Ken Langone, Steven Duncker, and Vicarage Stable, having taken both the FanDuel Fourstardave and the Resorts World Casino Manhattan.

Appleby knows this ground well. Master of The Seas, another Godolphin homebred, won the 2024 edition of the Maker's Mark Mile for the same Appleby-Buick combination, continuing a pattern that has made the Godolphin operation a consistent force at the Lexington oval each spring.

The Maker's Mark Mile will run as the ninth race on Friday's card with a 5:16 p.m. EDT post time. For a race that regularly serves as a directional marker for summer targets and fall championship planning, the presence of five Grade 1 winners in one field gives the 2026 edition an early-season weight it rarely carries.
